In the 1970s, Harlem gangster Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) grows to power with a network of heroin dealers that equals or surpasses the mob. He smuggles his product into the US by hiding it in the coffins of soldiers returning from Vietnam.

How to Watch

If you like your crime flicks to have a strong plot and great character development, then American Gangster is a must-watch. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe are the stars of this film. Both actors give performances that are the epitome of what it takes to be a true mogul and a savvy lawman, respectively.

The story is based on the real-life life of Harlem drug kingpin Frank Lucas, and his rise to the upper echelon of the 1970s heroin trade. The film was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, who won two Academy Awards for their performances.

One of the most memorable moments in the movie is when Frank Lucas shoots a rival drug dealer in the head on a crowded sidewalk. However, in a 2000 New York Magazine story written by Mark Jacobson, Lucas said that his actual account of the incident was a bit more subtle. In the article, he said that he did not touch any dead bodies.

DVD

American Gangster is a great crime film that works on many levels. It is a great portrait of Harlem in the 60s and early 70s and also a character drama that is based on a true story. It is a great movie and one of the best i have seen in recent times, with excellent performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

The film follows the rise and fall of a Harlem drug kingpin (Denzel Washington) during the Vietnam War. He smuggles heroin into the United States from Vietnam veterans' bodies and becomes an unstoppable force in the local criminal underworld. When his mentor dies, Frank seeks a more profitable way to do business. He cuts out the middleman and buys directly from overseas suppliers, resulting in cheap product that is consistently pumped into the city.

There is a good bit of violence in the film including some graphic imagery, but it never feels gratuitous or over the top and does not drag. The film is well made and has some slick production values.

Denzel Washington is a superb leading man and has a quiet, understated turn as the powerful Frank Lucas. He plays a character that is both wise and calculating, but he also has a lot of anger. He doesn't let it out often, but he lets his fury out when it's needed.

As the detective on the case, Russell Crowe is also very good. He's not perfect, but he has enough conviction to keep you rooting for him throughout the film. He also has some good scenes with Josh Brolin and Cuba Gooding Jr.

The film is a solid 157 minutes and doesn't lose the audience's interest very easily, even with all the action. It does have a few moments where the story takes a few unexpected turns, but it doesn't drag out too long and there are plenty of interesting things going on.

This is a must-watch for anyone who loves gangster movies and wants a good story that will keep you engaged throughout. It also has some of the most impressive acting I've seen in a while and you can't help but feel like you're part of this story. The characters are compelling, there's a depth to them and their motivations are clear from the start.

Blu-ray

Ridley Scott's American Gangster is a solid action movie with great performances from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. It has a good story and a decent soundtrack too. The movie is well worth seeing on Blu-ray if you haven't yet.

The film centers on two parallel stories, one centered on Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), a Harlem gangster who takes over the heroin business in New York after the death of Bumpy Johnson. The other is about Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), a cop who refuses to bend to corruption while many of his colleagues do.

Both of these stories are well-written and portrayed in an excellent way. Denzel Washington's performance as Frank Lucas is one of the best performances he's given in years, while Russell Crowe plays his role with great resolve and strength.

Unlike other gangster films, this movie does a great job of showing the human side of the gangster world. You see, Frank Lucas is a loving father and philanthropist who loves his family, but at the same time he is a cold-blooded gangster leader who wants to maintain his position as drug trafficker.

Universal's release of American Gangster on Blu-ray is a fine version of the movie. It features an improved DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track over the HD DVD's Dolby Digital Plus track, which is welcome as the former was quite front heavy. It also includes more extras than the previous edition.

The transfer for American Gangster is very true to the original theatrical 1080p 1.85:1 widescreen source. While the image looks somewhat washed out and dull from frame to frame, it still manages to provide a lot of detail in tighter shots.

A few exterior city street-level scenes show a very high level of detail, though they have a decidedly dark tone. Black levels are moderately deep, and contrast is flattened and desaturated as a result of the film's intentionally low-key visual style.

American Gangster was a great film, and it remains a must-see for anyone who is interested in the gangster genre. The Blu-ray version is a must-have for anyone who loves crime dramas.
