Luca (Jacob Tremblay) is a young sea monster who lives below the Mediterranean Sea's surface, accompanied by his overprotective mother (Maya Rudolph) and oft-distracted father (Jim Gaffigan). Luca's curiosity gets the best of him when he meets a fellow changeling who's also living under the water, Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer).
When Luca and Alberto discover that they can actually take human form on dry land, they decide to explore the nearby fishing town of Portorosso. Along the way, they meet Giulia (Emma Berman), a tomboy fisherman's daughter who is eager to enter Portorosso's annual triathlon involving swimming, pasta-eating and a bike race. They also meet Ercole Visconti (Saverio Raimondo), a preening bully who won't appreciate outsiders. He mocks Giulia, but when Luca and Alberto encourage her to participate in the Portorosso Cup, she challenges Ercole to a duel and beats him for the first time in years.
Although the film isn't as intense as many recent Pixar offerings, Luca is still a strong film with lots of heart and imagination. Its underlying themes, particularly about the pitfalls of impulsivity and insecurity, are also relevant for kids.
The movie has an appealing setting in a sleepy Italian seaside town, and its animation is strong. Director Enrico Casarosa's intimate knowledge of the locale helped to bolster this understated yet beautifully animated film.
Lucia is a story about friendship, family, and ambition, and its message is one that kids and parents can talk about together. The film is also a good opportunity to discuss the importance of being accepting of different people and cultures.

They must also overcome a number of challenges along the way, including the town bully Ercole Visconti and his crew of sex-obsessed misfits.
