Eloise at Christmastime - How to Watch Online

The made-for-television movie Eloise at Christmastime is based on Kay Thompson’s popular picture books. Directed by Kevin Lima and starring Julie Andrews, Sofia Vassilieva, Debra Monk, Kenneth Welsh, and Sarah Topham, it’s a heartwarming tale of how a child helps to bring the spirit of the holiday to others.

Eloise, a six-year-old girl living in New York’s Plaza hotel with her British Nanny (Julie Andrews), is determined to celebrate Christmas in her own special way. She gives gifts to the hotel staff, plays matchmaker before a woman marries the wrong man and even helps save a neighbor’s home.

The Story

Eloise, the bunchy-bloused, spindly-legged scamp who lives in New York’s Plaza hotel, is back again this Christmas for another rollicking adventure. Based on Kay Thompson’s popular series of picture books, this 2003 Wonderful World of Disney telemovie was directed by Kevin Lima and stars Sofia Vassilieva as the inquisitive little girl and Julie Andrews as her British nanny.

After a prank gone wrong, Eloise discovers that Mr. Peabody is expecting a visitor and has no clue who it could be. He tries to distract her with a story, but she gets the idea that he’s planning a wedding for his daughter Rachel. She starts asking questions, but he declines to answer them and tells her to be quiet.

Next, she decides to make a few changes to the hotel. She renames her room “Adams,” which means the name of her late father, but her mother doesn’t like it, so she makes a pink promise to never tell her father again. She also adds a few things to her wardrobe, including the dress she wore at her first concert.

With her nanny, dog Weenie (not a dachshund) and turtle Skipperdee by her side, Eloise sets out to spread the holiday cheer in her own irrepressible way. The book’s rhymes are lively and amusing, as are Hilary Knight’s illustrations, which capture Eloise’s boundless energy, milk belly whirling, creating havoc and ruffling feathers in her endless Christmas fun.

It’s no wonder she’s a favorite of the Plaza staff and patrons. She’s always up to something, jingling, spreading her cheer, and tying tassels on thermostats.

She even rekindles her feelings for Bill, the waiter she used to love. But then a new couple arrives at the Plaza. Brooks Oliver is the owner of the hotel, and Rachel is his daughter, but she used to be very fond of Eloise’s waiter Bill.

When she finds out that he’s married to her, she becomes furious and wants to stop it, but she can’t do much. She tries using her spy kit equipment, but she doesn’t have enough time to use it before the wedding takes place.

The Cast

Eloise, a six-year-old mischievous girl who lives in the Plaza hotel, is always in the holiday spirit. But this year she has a lot of work to do, as the owner of the hotel's daughter is getting married on Christmas Eve.

As usual, Eloise finds her way into every situation at the Plaza and interferes in her friends' lives. When she discovers that the fiance, Brooks Oliver, is really a criminal, Eloise is determined to find out what his secrets are.

After spotting Brooks under a desert tray in the dining hall, Eloise decides to spy on him and see what he's up to. She soon learns that he's borrowing money from all over the country to make it appear that he has a fortune, and that his crook business is taking off.

Later, when Rachel and Bill are eating lunch in the dining room, Eloise tries to get them together by telling them there's a Harvard alumni party. She even sends Rachel red roses with a card that reads "from your secret admirer," but she's not sure if it's her idea or if Rachel will be able to accept it.

At the same time, Eloise's nanny, Mrs. Thornton, is in trouble and needs her help to stay at the Plaza. She tells Eloise that she can use the hotel's money to help her, but Eloise is skeptical and isn't sure if she wants to help.

Eloise at Christmastime is a sequel to the original film, Eloise at the Plaza, and features the same cast. Like the previous film, this is a solid holiday tale that's sure to entertain both kids and adults alike. It's a fine DVD release, with excellent video and audio quality. A couple of interesting featurettes are included as well.

The Music

A precocious six-year-old girl tries her hand at matchmaking in this live-action movie based on Kay Thompson's classic book. She elicits the help of her nanny, played "rawther" well by Julie Andrews, as she schemes to displace the owner of a Plaza hotel's daughter from her wedding to a mysterious crook and save her best friend Bill from his own Christmas Eve escapade.

The film's music was composed by Bruce Broughton, who wrote for TV and has won two Emmy Awards. His soundtrack is chock-full of holiday tunes, including 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' and 'Frosty the Snowman' as well as a number of original tracks performed by Eloise herself.

Eloise has a busy day, delivering her presents to various people. She also goes for a walk with her canine companion Weenie and sees her grandmother Mrs. Thornton move out of her apartment. When she returns to her room, she faints.

But she soon wakes up and explains to her nanny that she saw a ghost. The old lady's spirit seems to have followed her to the hotel and is waiting for Eloise in her own bedroom.

It's not just Eloise who has a knack for mischief, the whole Plaza is up to her usual antics in this tale of Christmas yuletide fun. One moment she's delivering her presents and the next she's looking for Mr. Salamone, the hotel's general manager.

She's even been seen trying to spy on the hotel's delivery of a Christmas tree! And she's even managed to find out that the hotel's nanny is a "spy."

In this family film, three children with separated parents try to surprise each other by reuniting for Christmas. Their plan to put their differences aside is a hit with the audience, but they're not quite as successful with their parents.

If you're looking for a festive treat this year, then why not download or stream the Eloise at Christmastime soundtrack album? It's a must-have for fans of the film!

The Disc

Eloise (Sofia Vassilieva) lives in a penthouse in The Plaza Hotel with her Nanny (Julie Andrews). While she spends her days "skibbling" around the lobby and causing mischief, she tries to get into yuletide spirit by playing matchmaker. When the owner of the hotel's daughter, Rachel Peabody (Sarah Topham), announces her impending marriage to a sleazy Harvard grad named Brooks Oliver III (Rick Roberts), Eloise becomes convinced that she's marrying him for the wrong reasons and sets out to sway Rachel away from her fiance and towards Bill, a likable waiter at the hotel's restaurant.

As usual, Eloise's wacky antics are a lot of fun to watch, and her irrepressible spiritedness helps keep things interesting throughout the film. In fact, despite the fact that the main characters seem to be based on the book's author Kay Thompson and illustrator Hilary Knight, it is clear that Elizabeth Chandler's screenplay has made significant changes from its predecessor, putting less emphasis on Eloise's shenanigans and making room for several intriguing supporting players instead.

The cast, besides Vassilieva and Topham, includes Julie Andrews as Nanny, Jeffrey Tambor as Mr. Salamone, Christine Baranski as Bill's girlfriend, and Gavin Creel as a kind-hearted hotel staffer who used to have feelings for Rachel.

A Christmastime soundtrack album is available to download or stream from your favourite platform, featuring a number of popular Christmas classics such as 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' and 'Frosty the Snowman' and some of Eloise's own tunes. You can also purchase a copy of the DVD for yourself or as a Christmas gift.

This disc is a great gift for the Eloise fan in your life and contains some great extra features that you won't find on most other DVDs. The first, an 11 minute featurette called Absolutely Kay Thompson, gives viewers a good look at the acclaimed author of the Eloise series.

Another bonus feature on the DVD is a 'Read Eloise Books' menu which leads you to some of the books from the original series. This isn't a useful feature to me, but it may be interesting for other fans of the Eloise series.
