A post-apocalyptic saga that's just as much about Tom Hanks as it is Caleb Landry Jones, Miguel Sapochnik's family-friendly Finch stars the ever-paternal Hanks as an aging robot engineer whose life seems to be winding down. After a gamma flare wiped out most of civilization, Finch has spent the last decade living in an underground St. Louis lab with a dog he adopted long ago. He's a lonely figure, a cranky old man with a nagging cough and a collection of salvaged LPs, but he loves his pet (Seamus) so much that he's determined to make a robot to take care of him when he can no longer.
When a deadly weather system strikes and Finch must flee St. Louis with his new creation, the only things that keep him going are a salvaged radio and a little gizmo. The film is a road-trip buddy drama set in a dystopian America where the climate is deteriorating, a gamma flare has destroyed the ozone layer, and people may kill each other for survival.
The world is a scary place, but the movie offsets the grim vistas with an adorable, lovable robotic prototype that Hanks's creation, "Jeff," (Caleb Landry Jones) teaches to forage, drive and fetch, and that helps to bridge the gap between the bleak circumstances and Finch's increasingly ruminative musings about life. There are few movies better suited for a gentle ride than "Finch," but its disarming tenderness is offset by an uncanny ability to convey how human emotions can clash with the machine that's supposed to be their guide.
In other words, the human-robot relationship is a complicated one. Yet, in a world where the only thing that matters is survival, it's hard to think of anything more empowering than a robot that's doing its best to be good, and that's the central theme at the heart of this movie.

The combination of Hanks's performance, Landry Jones' likable robot and Seamus's sweet naivete makes this one of the better movies you'll watch this year, and it's easy to recommend.
