Galavant is Now Available to Watch on Hulu

Galavant is a very short series, which makes it easy to binge watch on a weekend. It was also one of ABC's most unpopular shows that year, but it somehow survived until it was renewed for a second season.

It's an irreverent take on classical Disney renaissance movies and stage musicals, but it's also so very funny that you won't mind its wackiness. It's just hard to see how it got canceled.

How to Watch

The cult series Galavant is finally available to stream on Hulu, and it's a must watch for fans of campy fantasy adventure shows. The show aired on ABC but was canceled in 2016, and now it's available on the streaming service.

This is a series that features all the usual suspects of fairy tale romance in medieval times, with lots of witty banter and plenty of musical numbers to go around. It also features a fair amount of cleverness, as well as some impressive feats of engineering. The best part is that it's all tied together with a genuinely fun storyline that never gets old, and the cast does an incredible job of it.

Episode 1

If you’re a fan of Disney renaissance movies or stage musicals, Galavant is the show for you. It’s an epic, high-concept fairy tale infused with pop songs and off-kilter wackiness by screenwriter Dan Fogelman, composer Alan Menken, and lyricist Glenn Slater.

When the heroic Sir Galavant loses his true love Madalena to a cruel king, he hits rock bottom and falls into a deep, drunken depression. But when Princess Isabella (Marisa Tomei) shows up and offers her assistance, Galavant decides to take up the mantle of hero once again in order to save her kingdom from a vicious and despicable king.

After the party is captured and robbed by pirates, they end up on Hortensia, where they are befriended by wedding planner Chester Wormwood (Richard Lewis). As they prepare to battle Wormwood, Isabella begins to realize that she has feelings for her cousin Harry. She is also forced to deal with the fact that she and Gareth are in love.

Episode 2

A wacky musical comedy, Galavant begins with the title character (Joshua Sasse) riding to save his beloved Madalena from the clutches of evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson). But soon Galavant finds that he's losing his "happily ever after" and that Queen Madalena (Mallory Jansen) is in fact a nymphomaniac psychopath.

It's a tale of a hero trying to win back his lost love, with plenty of laugh-out-loud songs written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. The show's cast is also great: Timothy Omundson is King Richard, who possesses a heart of gold and a truly magnificent beard; Karen David is Galavant's new sidekick Isabella, an iron-willed princess with a fierce love for her young cousin; Mallory Jansen is the trope-dodging Madalena, a nymphomaniac who believes her own dreams can come true if she only has the right tools.

The show's second season picks up with Galavant and Richard reclaiming their kingdom, and Galavant's quest to rescue his new love Isabella. But their adventure comes to a screeching halt when they are shipwrecked on the way back to Richard's kingdom. Luckily, they eventually find a bar in West Hollow-wood where they can get help from a fortune teller who can connect them to Isabella.

Episode 3

Galavant is a wacky fairy-tale musical comedy that's as off-kilter as it gets. There are jousts, sword fights, and of course a ton of songs written by the legendary Alan Menken.

It's a fun, if short, show that's especially well done in its first season. Despite being one of ABC's worst shows, it was ordered back for a second season by then-ABC president Paul Lee, who favored creating content with long-term cultural staying power over immediate ratings success.

The show's most dazzling achievement is its use of music to tell the story. Rather than using traditional lyrics, the production team reworked songs into a new score that was actually quite enjoyable to watch. This is especially true if you're a fan of musicals on television or live theater in general. Among the cast, Joshua Sasse's singing and dancing is the best of the bunch, but Karen David and Mallory Jansen also have their moments.

Episode 4

Galavant is a musical comedy adventure series about a gallant knight who aims to rescue his love Madalena from the clutches of wicked King Richard. It's a surprisingly fun ride, thanks to a powerful team of screenwriter Dan Fogelman, composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hercules), and lyricist Glenn Slater (Tangled, The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

In episode 4, Galavant, Princess Isabella, and Sid have a run in with land-bound pirates who want the Jewel of Valencia for themselves. But the group manages to work together and see past their petty arguments.

Then, King Richard learns that Madalena is cheating on him with a jester. He tries to win her over in a different way. But his attempts aren't successful, and she's forced to go to a dungeon for her sins. She also discovers that she's been lied to by Wormwood. But that's a whole other story!

Episode 5

Galavant is a fun show that continues to improve with each episode. The music is getting better and the songs are more lyrical, which makes the series even more enjoyable to watch.

In this week's installment, we watch Sir Galavant (Timothy Omundson) and Princess Isabella (Cameron Mackie) reach their destination in Valencia. Along the way, they encounter a number of entertaining albeit cheesy moments.

The most impressive one involves a magic trick that can connect Galavant to Madalena using a crystal ball. It also happens to be the first time Madalena has ever felt anything besides anger and envy. And it's a big deal, considering she lost her "happily ever after" to Richard.

Episode 6

Galavant is a musical comedy fairy tale that features a cast of fantastic characters. It's a mashup of Disney renaissance movies and stage musicals with songs written by legendary Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and lyricist Glenn Slater.

The first season of Galavant was a disastrous ratings bomb. It was a terrible fit for ABC's Sunday night lineup, and it was one of the network's lowest-rated shows that year.

But then-ABC president Paul Lee ordered a second season despite this bleak outlook. He hoped to make Galavant "sticky," betting that its long-term cultural appeal would be more important than immediate ratings success.

When Galavant loses his true love Madalena to evil King Richard, he vows to reclaim her and win her back. But he soon realizes that winning back his love could be more complicated than he had imagined. Episode 7

Galavant gets his chance to be a hero when King Richard challenges his brother to a duel and needs a champion to fight for him. Watch this episode of galavant, starring Joshua Sasse and Timothy Omundson, online right here via TV Fanatic to see what happens.

HILLARY: The most impressive aspect of this ABC show is its wink-wink humor. Even when things aren't going your way, you can count on Galavant to give you a chuckle.

DANIELLE: Well, this is a musical comedy, so it's not hard to imagine that they could come up with some goofy stuff for a change, but there were only so many ways to do it. This episode of galavant features a lot of the usual suspects, plus some wacky stuff that only comes from an ABC studio.

In the end, it's hard to pick out the one or two most memorable moments from all the rest, but this episode does have some of the best ones. The most fun was figuring out the mystery of a mysteriously missing swag bag and learning about Sid's past. It was also the most gratifying to see a few of them finally find their way home.

Episode 8

A dashing knight hero loses his true love to evil King Richard; he embarks on a quest to restore his “happily ever after.” Galavant teams up with Princess Isabella and her loyal squire Sid, who are determined to help him win back Madalena.

With his luck in a downward spiral, Galavant enters a jousting tournament to prove himself. But he quickly learns that being a hero again is a lot more difficult than he thought.

When land-bound pirates capture Galavant, Isabella and Sid, he must learn to get over his petty squabbles with the others and work together as a team to fight for their kingdom. Throughout this week’s episode, Galavant, Isabella and Sid struggle to get over their misunderstandings and find a way to save their kingdom.

With its off-kilter fairy-tale wackiness and a fantastic cast, Galavant is one of the most satisfying sequels from the last decade. Its renewal was a risky bet by then-ABC president Paul Lee, who was hoping to build brands with long-term cultural staying power over immediate ratings success.
