Firefighters use their EMT training to provide care for injured victims. They also perform other vital tasks such as helping to ventilate smoke-filled areas and salvage valuable property.

Meanwhile, Buck and Eddie have to rescue a woman who fell into a hotel garage. Their efforts are hindered by the 16 aftershocks that have hit the area.

Episode 5: “Survival”

When it comes to survival, there are a number of ways to go about it. There are books and movies about surviving disasters, as well as gadgets and toys that help people stay alive when the going gets tough.

In the real world, it's more difficult to make it through a life-threatening event without sacrificing your health and well-being, so it's no wonder that the best way to survive a disaster is by preparing for it. A good place to start is by acquiring a few useful survival skills, such as knowing when to seek shelter and when it's safe to open the door.

It's not uncommon for a single person to get stuck in a building and spend most of his or her time trying to escape, so the ability to remain alive in a challenging situation is no small feat. As a result, this episode of 9/11 one day in america pays homage to the brave souls that stepped up to the challenge and made it out alive. Watch the episode for free on National Geographic, or on demand at Amazon, Hulu, fuboTV, Sling, and Apple TV. It's a good idea to sign up for a pro membership, which also helps support new feature development!

Episode 6: “Recovery”

In this episode, the series turns its focus on the people who survived the day and their journeys of recovery. It’s a process that involves many different avenues, including clinical treatment, peer support, faith-based approaches, and self-care.

It can involve a commitment to oneself, others, and their Higher Power. It’s also a process of learning new skills and behaviors that are helpful in overcoming setbacks.

This episode is a very good example of how One Day In America uses fresh footage to recreate the chaos and terror of September 11, 2001. The filmmakers do a great job of capturing the panic and the destruction, but they don’t sensationalize any of the impact.

For example, they don’t show the two planes hitting the towers a second time, but they do use video of people on the street looking up at the billowing smoke. And they don’t skimp on the images of mangled, burnt bodies on the ground.

It’s a powerful documentary, and it’s well worth watching. It’s also a reminder of the tragedy of that day and how it changed America forever. And it gives people who were there on that day a voice to speak for themselves.
