Storyline
Casper the friendly ghost has become a classic character that is beloved by both kids and adults. When a motherless girl moves with her father to a haunted mansion, she meets Casper, the “friendly ghost you’ve never seen before,” who falls in love with her and wants to be human again. Unfortunately, the house’s owner Carrigan Crittenden, who owns it because of her dead father’s legacy, wants to remove all ghosts from her home in order to hunt for a hidden treasure inside.
But James Harvey, an afterlife therapist who travels between haunted houses to help spirits cross over to the other side, comes to help and befriend Casper. He also befriends Kat, who becomes a fan of Casper and his friends.
As they become friends, Casper and Kat discover a machine built by his father that can bring the dead back to life. Unfortunately, the evil Carrigan has plans to use it for her own wicked purposes and will stop at nothing to get her hands on it.
In the meantime, Casper’s uncles, Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie, are a trio of nasty pranksters who want to kill Dr. Harvey, which is why he’s so upset when they trick him into reciting his wife’s name and trying to convince him that she’s in touch with them.
They try to make a deal with him, but it doesn’t work, so they decide to try and kill him instead. This leads to Dr. Harvey stumbling drunk into a construction site and dying, which leaves the Lazarus machine unusable for the rest of the movie.
Eventually, Casper sacrifices his own life so that Kat can have her dad’s. However, his generosity doesn’t last long, as the Lazarus is used to restore Dr. Harvey to life instead. This was a pretty tragic development in the film, but it’s something that I think was necessary to give the story a more dramatic feel. I don’t know why the director, Brad Silberling, chose to go this route, but it does add some more depth to the characters and makes for an overall more spooky, dark movie that still has some fun spooky moments.

He's able to speak with other animals, like a rooster and a mole, but this only depresses him when they fail him. He tries to make friends with the cat and mouse and a group of hens, but all of these attempts end up in failure.
Eventually, Casper has to give up on trying to make friends. Eventually, he's just going to go back to being a scary ghost. He's also very tired of being afraid.
Then, in a later cartoon special, he goes to a ghost school where he gets to befriend Nerdly and Fungo. Nerdly is a very big, scary ghost who has lots of brute strength, but Fungo is an easy-going ghost who isn't as strong.
In the 1995 film, the movie Casper Meets Wendy, we get a better understanding of what happened to Casper. He was a child who died and the film focuses on his inventor who invented a way to bring him back. While the film did not have a full explanation for why he's a ghost, it is an important step in explaining his story.

When Dr Harvey and Kat arrive at the manor, they're surprised to find that the spooky house is home to three mischievous ghosts and one friendly boy ghost named Casper. The cute ghoul is quite the charmer and develops a crush on Kat, but his rowdy uncles make life comically difficult for everyone.
There's a good mix of comedy and action throughout the movie, as well as some genuinely poignant moments. The acting is excellent, and despite its age-targeted appeal, the film still manages to offer a lot of heart and humor.
Rather than striving for a realistic look, Casper's ghost effects are designed to be cartoonish and easy to believe in. This helps the film retain its cute spookiness and avoid the dated feeling that so many digital effects can cause in kids films these days.

Universal's catalogue releases are notorious for their smoothed-over DNRed video, but Casper doesn't fall victim to this too much. The 1080p transfer is surprisingly stable and viewer-friendly, though there are some light compression issues that pop up from time to time.
