How to Watch City of Lies on Netflix

Johnny Depp

While most people will remember Johnny Depp for his teen-idol roles in 21 Jump Street (1987) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), the actor has a long career that includes films such as Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. He also starred in Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate and was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in Alice in Wonderland (2010).

Johnny Depp has a troubled childhood and an erratic behavior that has caused him to have frequent drug arrests. He has been accused of punching a crew member twice in the ribs and taking drugs on set while filming City of Lies (2018), and his reputation has suffered due to this.

The screenplay by Christian Contreras is a compelling one and it makes the film worth watching. Besides Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker and Rockmond Dunbar, the movie also features great performances from Shea Whigham, Toby Huss and Shamier Anderson.

Depp plays a retired Los Angeles detective, Russell Poole, who is obsessed with the murder of Biggie Smalls. His home is stacked with news clippings and other items that are related to the case.

He’s so dedicated to the case that he even hangs mugshots on his wall, as if it were a shrine. But his obsession doesn’t stop there.

The other major character is Jack Jackson, a journalist who’s also investigating the murder. He’s a seasoned veteran who has been on the job for nearly 20 years.

However, he’s never been successful in solving the murder. But the movie still works well because it gives us an interesting portrait of a broken man who’s committed to his mission and who has no idea how long he’ll be able to keep up with it.

There have been many books, magazines, documentaries and even a 10-part 2018 cable TV docudrama that have tried to unpack the unsolved killings of Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace (a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G.) in the late 1990s. But with "City of Lies," director Brad Furman takes a look at the same case with a twist that may not be quite as fresh or surprising as it first seems.

In this film, Johnny Depp plays retired LAPD detective Russell Poole, who has spent years investigating the 1997 murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G. He tries to put the pieces together as he uncovers evidence that suggests a wide-ranging conspiracy within the Los Angeles police department to cover up the true murderer. In his investigation, Poole develops a relationship with journalist Jack Jackson (Forest Whitaker), who is trying to write an in-depth retrospective of the Biggie Smalls murder, and together they find a common interest in the truth.

While this film isn't as fresh or interesting as some of the other films that have explored the same case, it does feature some incredibly powerful performances from Depp and Whitaker. In particular, Depp gives a truly naturalistic performance as a disillusioned detective who has a love for his career even though it's causing him pain.

As for Whitaker, he brings some really edgy energy to the role of journalist Jack Jackson. He begins out distrusting Poole's investigation and then becomes a strong partner as they both try to get the truth.

In the end, City of Lies isn't quite as stale or surprising as other movies have been with this story, but it feels like it was pushed to the back burner for too long. Despite its flaws, it's still an entertaining movie and a great way to learn more about the rap artists' murders.
