Season 5 sees Foyle’s replacement DCS John Meredith create unease at the station, and he’s not much of a charmer. Milner’s investigation of a trucking racketeer leads to a murder, and he’s threatened by his “powerful friends”.

Meanwhile, Sam moves into a guest house with Adam Wainwright, but they aren’t a couple. One of the tenants, Mandy Dean, is having a hard time raising a baby fathered by a black G.I. named Gabe Kelly.

The episode also introduces Arthur Valentine (Tim McMullan) who at first annoys Foyle but becomes a collaborator; he means well and treats people with respect, he is gay. He and Hilda Pierce are the first recurring characters we encounter who are not simply people Foyle dislikes but people he actually wants to work for.

Season 8

As the Second World War draws to a close, former DCS Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen, Out of Africa) continues to use his unerring investigative skills on behalf of MI5. He's joined by his ever-faithful driver Sam Wainwright (Honeysuckle Weeks, My Brother Tom).

Season 8 opens with a murder in London. When a translator for the Nuremberg trials is killed, Foyle is drawn into the dark world of international oil politics and corrupt Nazi businessmen. He also investigates a right-wing manifesto inflaming anti-Semitic tensions.

During the course of his investigations, Foyle uncovers a bomb threat to the proposed Palestine conference in London, a product of increasing tensions between competing Arab and Jewish interests in the region. In addition, he helps to protect a former Nazi officer turned MI5 informant from American authorities.
