How to Watch Halston on Netflix

One of the latest tititular dramas to land on Netflix is Halston, a five-episode limited series based on the life of fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick. The show follows him from his hat-filled meteoric rise to fame when Jackie Kennedy wore one of his designs at her inauguration in 1961.

Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor is known for a career spanning three decades that includes roles in Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge and a role as a Jedi Knight in the Star Wars saga. He's also a risk taker and loves to push himself and take on new challenges.

In Ryan Murphy's latest project, McGregor plays the iconic fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick in Halston - a five-part miniseries about his life. He's up for an Emmy for his performance in the series, which begins streaming May 14 on Netflix.

While McGregor's portrayal of Halston is a major part of what makes the show compelling, it's not enough to save "Halston" from its flaws. The series is a compelling epic about ego, but it fumbles with incidents and structure as it tries to make them matter.

The story is a bit too broad and clumsy to be particularly gripping, and it could have used a tighter focus that would have put a clear spin on the events. That said, the performances are great and the production design is gorgeous — so for some, it's still worth seeing.

Costume designer Jeriana San Juan told Insider that she worked closely with McGregor to ensure everything on screen felt as genuine as possible, including a number of sewing lessons for the actor before shooting started. It's a testament to both of them that they were able to achieve a level of expertise with their craft that helped to elevate the show above other biopics about fashion.

Rebecca Dayan

Rebecca Dayan is a French actress and model who has been active in the area of maternal mortality. She has appeared in a number of TV shows and movies including Celeste and Jesse Forever, Novitiate, From Paris With Love, Limitless, and Halston.

To prepare for her role as the iconic jewelry designer Elsa Peretti in 'Halston,' Dayan spent more than a year immersing herself in her life. She studied her designs, modeled for her, and even spent time in Tiffany & Co. She had to get a feel for Peretti's Florentine roots, as well as her artisanship.

While Ewan McGregor’s performance is the series’s star, it’s really Dayan’s take on Peretti that’s worth your attention. She’s a multitalented artist who embodies the spirited spirit of a woman who grew up in Italy, but later came to New York to pursue her design career.

The show focuses on the rise and fall of Halston, but there’s much more to it than just fashion. It’s also a coming of age story, focusing on a young designer who’s just as prone to excess partying and booze as he is to launching a successful business.

Halston is the latest period drama to hit Netflix, and it looks to be a strong contender for Emmys in its technical categories. It also has the benefit of airing recently, keeping it fresh in viewers’ minds.

Krysta Rodriguez

Krysta Rodriguez is bringing Liza Minnelli's dynamic stage presence and signature mannerisms to life in Netflix's upcoming Halston. The multihyphenate actress, best known for her role on NBC's Smash and TV shows like Trial & Error and Quantico, plays the iconic performer in Daniel Minahan's limited series premiering May 14 -- and PEOPLE is bringing you an exclusive preview of her debut episode.

Rodriguez, who is half Mexican, has performed on Broadway and in theater productions such as Good Vibrations and Cabaret. She also starred in the film Shadow of Fear and appeared on the popular NBC television show Smash.

Her stage work has earned her many awards and nominations, including the coveted Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play (Outer Critics Circle Awards) for Seared. She is also a member of the New York Theatre Workshop.

The talented actress and singer is currently appearing in the limited series Halston, starring Ewan McGregor as American fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, which is produced by Daniel Minahan and Killer Films. The drama also stars Gian Franco Rodriguez as Venezuelan artist and Halston’s lover Victor Hugo. Other cast members include Isen Robbins, Aimee Schoof, Chris Bongirne, Routh, Jesse Manning and Katy Donnelly.

Rory Culkin

Rory Culkin is the younger brother of actors Macaulay and Kieran. He started his acting career playing the younger versions of his brothers' characters in their films, like Richie Rich and Igby Goes Down.

Halston is a limited Netflix series that takes a closer look at the life of the legendary fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick (played by Ewan McGregor), who built an empire that spanned the globe and defined the 1970s and '80s New York lifestyle. The limited series also looks at the people in Halston’s life, including his close friends and models.

Several celebrities make appearances in the series, including entertainer Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez) and supermodel Karen Bjornson (Sietzka Rose), who both famously wore Halston outfits. Elsa Peretti, another renowned model, gets her own moment in the spotlight.

While the series pays tribute to Schumacher’s real-life meeting with Halston on Fire Island, it also takes a few liberties. Instead of using the event as a basis for their working relationship, it reimagines the encounter as a more established designer taking note of one of the young upstart’s window settings and demanding that he come work for him.

Although the portrayal of Joel Schumacher isn’t as pristine as it could be, it still captures his character’s genuine concern for his younger employee’s drug abuse. Rather than glamorizing or moralizing, the series treats his use of cocaine as an aspect of his life that shaped him.

David Pittu

The latest Ryan Murphy project is a limited series on Netflix called Halston, which follows legendary fashion designer Roy Frowick (Ewan McGregor). The limited series explores how Halston leveraged his single name to build a global fashion empire that is synonymous with luxury, elegance, sex and fame.

The show also takes place in 1970s New York, where it centers around Studio 54 and the infamous party scene. It’s a glamorous and dramatic look at how Halston became the designer we know today.

In addition to McGregor, the cast includes model-turned-jewelry-designer Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan), singer, actress, and dancer Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez) and artist Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez). Money man David Mahoney (Bill Pullman) is also on hand.

As a two-time Tony nominee, David Pittu is an accomplished actor who has starred in a number of Broadway productions. He has also narrated numerous books and received the Audie Award for best male solo performance for his reading of Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch.

As a veteran audiobook narrator, Pittu has a voice that sounds like it may remind you of Rod Serling’s famous narrating style. He has also been a finalist in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Theater Talent Search. He has appeared in several television series, including Men in Black and King Kong.

Sullivan Jones

Sullivan Jones is best known for his roles in Hulu's The Looming Tower and Wu-Tang: An American Saga, but the San Francisco-born actor also has stage credits. He studied theater at Brown University and the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, according to IMDB.

Ryan Murphy's new series Halston follows the life of legendary fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick (Ewan McGregor). It's based on a biography by Steven Gaines and is executive produced by Murphy, Ian Brennan, Alexis Martin Woodall, Daniel Minahan, Sharr White and Ewan McGregor.

The five 45-minute episodes that comprise the series follow Halston's rise to fame as a designer of minimalist fashion. He establishes his name and brand in 1970's and '80's New York, establishing himself as an icon.

But his empire of luxury, sex and status comes at a cost. It's a price that eventually becomes his undoing.

What's more, he's a dangerous genius, whose excessive drug use and promiscuous behavior are a constant source of drama. His chain smoking and frequent swearing are just as much a part of the character as his design aesthetic, which is drapey and overly romantic.

The show's glamor-soaked style and eye-popping visuals are fine, but it lacks the substance to make a lasting impression. While Halston's story is worth following for its scope, it doesn't go deep or provide a satisfying conclusion.

Ed Austin

Despite some gripes from Halston’s estate, the new limited series from Ryan Murphy tells an interesting story about the rags-to-riches life of America’s first superstar fashion designer. It explores a complicated career and the pitfalls that come with it, from Iowa to Studio 54.

Halston’s name built an empire, and his style defined an era. But when a hostile takeover threatens to scuttle his business, Halston struggles to reinvent himself and find success.

This limited series follows Roy Halston Frowick (Ewan McGregor), a one-named designer who ruled the '70s and '80s New York fashion world. It’s a fact-based, fictional exploration of his perilous rise and fall.

The drama is set in the era of disco, and we see Halston designing sexy, single-fabric dresses that became a wardrobe staple for young women. We also get glimpses into his wild nights at Studio 54, and his cocaine addiction.

The series is based on Steven Gaines’ biography Simply Halston, and although it isn’t as detailed as other shows like Feud or Hollywood, it still gets the job done. Featuring Ewan McGregor and Liza Minnelli, it’s the latest addition to Netflix’s growing library of dramas.
