It goes on to discuss his relationship with Mary Todd, who was a prominent figure in society circles in Springfield.

What I liked about this documentary is that it did not gloss over Lincoln’s views on slavery. He was anti-slavery but did not believe enslaved people should be set free entirely, and he did not support abolitionists. Instead, he wanted to keep slavery out of new territories and advocated for a black sovereign nation. This is a very important point that we need to consider, because it helps to dispel the myth that Lincoln was a racist.

This is a very interesting documentary that will help people understand how President Lincoln’s views on slavery evolved as he became more and more involved in politics. It also shows that he was not just the idealized version of “The Great Emancipator,” but a flawed man who made mistakes and had to learn from them.

The six-part series begins with Lincoln's early years, when he was forced to leave his Kentucky homeland to start his law career in Indiana as the country was rapidly changing from a booming agricultural economy into a newly industrialized one. The show also focuses on his undistinguished single term in Congress.

But what I was most excited to see in the series was its depiction of Lincoln's anti-slavery beliefs, which were more nuanced than just his wartime Emancipation Proclamation, which was an attempt to end slavery behind enemy lines rather than free all slaves in the United States. The series also highlights his interest in colonizing free blacks outside of the United States, which was something that would have never occurred to him at the time.

Edna Greene Medford, professor of history at Howard University and a historian specializing in the Civil War, appears on screen as historical advisor to the show. She is the author of Lincoln and Emancipation, a co-author of Emancipating Lincoln: Three Views, and has lectured on the subject to a wide variety of audiences worldwide.

Despite being referred to as “The Great Emancipator,” Abraham Lincoln was much more complicated than his fame would have us believe. This docuseries is a reimagining of the life and presidency of America’s 16th president, breaking down his complex inner world through interviews, photos, cinematic recreations, and rare artifacts.

To make this docuseries, CNN enlisted the help of experts and historians to dig deeper into Lincoln’s storied life. Rather than taking a superficial approach to Lincoln’s time, the series focuses on Lincoln’s tragic personal life and how it affected his presidency.

For example, the series shows how Lincoln was abused as a child by his tyrannical father. He was forced to labor for him on his family farm, which Lincoln hated. The series also looks at Lincoln’s undistinguished single term in Congress, which ended when new President Zachary Taylor refused to give him a Cabinet post.

While we’re not sure whether the show is necessary to understand Lincoln’s storied presidency, we do think it’s an important piece of our national story. We loved that it featured a diverse group of expert voices.
