How to Watch Night at the Museum With Your Kids

When a divorced father (Ben Stiller) applies to be a night guard at the Museum of Natural History, he doesn't expect his first night to bring an ancient Egyptian curse to life. And when he does, he must break in and team with old friends to battle Ahkmenrah's resurrected evil brother Kahmunrah before it's too late.

What to expect

If you're looking for something to watch with your kids that is fun, safe and has a good mix of kid-friendly special effects and parent-friendly comedy, then Night at the Museum is a great choice. The film, which mixes live action and computer animation, offers plenty of positive messages about teamwork, cooperation and taking control of your life - all while offering a nice helping of history appreciation on the side.

When Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) takes a job as a night security guard at the museum, he has no idea how exciting it will be when the lights go out and all of the statues and miniature models come to life. It's not until he's chased off by a T-rex skeleton, an Easter Island head, cavemen and Joan of Arc that he learns about the rules: exhibits come to life at sunset and turn to dust if they're outside of the museum during sunrise.

The first Night at the Museum, which came out in 2004, was a huge hit with regular moviegoers and critics alike. It was a great example of how a big budget, family-friendly film could win Christmas by proxy, especially when there were very few "big films" out there.

But it also didn't do much to break the mold or introduce any new ideas or themes. It simply did what it was supposed to do, which was deliver a good time, which was enough for most people to make it through the film.

Now that the Disney empire has acquired 20th Century Fox, the company is taking a shot at revamping the series with an animated sequel. It's called Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again and it's available now on the Disney+ streaming platform.

The film opens on an archealogical excavation in Egypt in the 1930s and then jumps forward to London, where Larry and his son Nick (voiced by Joshua Bassett) are working at the Natural History Museum. They soon learn that most of the exhibits have been relegated to the Smithsonian, and they must decide which ones belong where.

Cast

Night at the Museum is a film that was released in 2006. It stars Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, a night security guard who discovers that the exhibits in his museum come to life after dark. It was directed by Shawn Levy and also starred Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan, Patrick Gallagher, Rami Malek, Mizuo Peck and Mickey Rooney.

After Larry is hired as a night security guard at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, his life is turned upside down. He finds that the exhibits in the museum come to life after dark and he meets several historical figures. He ends up bonding with his new friends, such as President Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), Native American guide Sacajawea (Mizuo Peck) and educated Pharoah Ahkmenrah.

The movie became a hit and the franchise went on to produce two sequels, Battle of the Smithsonian in 2009 and Secret of the Tomb in 2014. It was the first time that actors such as Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais and Rami Malek were able to star together.

Several of the actors who starred in the original Night at the Museum are coming together for a special event. The stars will appear on Stars in the House, a web series hosted by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley. The event will stream exclusively on PEOPLE and PeopleTV’s social media platforms.

A few of the Night at the Museum actors who are preparing to appear on Stars in the House include Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Carla Gugino, Hank Azaria and Steve Coogan. The event will benefit the Actors Fund.

In the Night at the Museum trilogy, the museum's exhibits come to life after dark, and Larry enlists the help of his ragtag group of friends in order to save it from the evil Egyptian Kahmunrah, who is on a quest to take over the world. But when a troublemaking monkey named Dexter steals the tablet that Ahkmenrah holds, it's up to Larry and his team of historical figures to defeat Kahmunrah and save the museum.

Release date

When Night at the Museum first hit theaters on December 22nd 2006, filmmaker Shawn Levy (Free Guy) introduced audiences to a world where all of the exhibits came to life thanks to an ancient Egyptian tablet. The film was based on the children's book of the same name written by Croatian illustrator Milan Trenc. It spawned two sequels, inspired a never-made theme park ride, and even got the LEGO treatment in 2020.

The story is centered on Larry Daley, a down-on-his-luck inventor and single father who takes a job as a night guard at the Museum of Natural History. He soon discovers that the museum's exhibits come to life when they're lit up at night. This allows him to become friends with historical figures like adventurous President Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) and Native American guide Sacajawea (Mizuo Peck).

In the second movie, Battle of the Smithsonian, Larry faces off against Kahmunrah, who has been resurrected and is determined to steal the tablet of Egyptian Pharoah Akhmenrah. He uses his famous flashlight to help him win the fight, but his victory is short-lived.

Now, it's time for a new chapter in the Night at the Museum franchise, as Disney Plus is getting ready to bring it to life in an animated version. This new film will be produced by original trilogy director Shawn Levy's 21 Laps, with Matt Danner helming the project. Its script comes from Ray DeLaurentis and William Schifrin, with the film also adapted from the books by Milan Trenc.

This time around, a young Nick Daley (Joshua Bassett) is going to take over for his father Larry on the night shift at the museum. But when old enemies return to haunt the museum, Nick must join forces with Jedediah, Octavius, and Sacagawea to stop them.

With a great cast and a fresh look, Disney Plus' new Night at the Museum is set to be a major hit. The animated film will debut on Disney Plus on December 9th, 2022.

While the original Night at the Museum movies starred Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, the new animated film will be voiced by Zachary Levi (Tangled) and Joshua Bassett (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series). Thomas Lennon will also be returning to play Teddy Roosevelt. The film is also bringing back other original characters from the first three films, including Gus the dinosaur and Reginald the monkey.

Rating

Night at the Museum is a fun and imaginative movie for kids to watch, with a nice mixture of special effects that will keep the younger viewers entertained. The film is based on the 1993 book by Milan Trenc and has an excellent cast of characters.

A divorced father applies for a job as a night guard at the museum of natural history and is surprised when the exhibits come to life. He has no idea what to expect, but after a few frantic adventures, Larry learns that the exhibits are animated by an Egyptian tablet that he has accidentally left in his basement.

Fortunately, retired night-watchmen Gus (Mickey Rooney), Cecil (Dick Van Dyke) and Reginald (Bill Cobbs) help Larry get the tablet back. But before they can do this, they have to fight off a group of thugs led by Attila the Hun and his allies.

This is a great film to see with the family and is suitable for children aged 6 and up, as the action can be scary at times. It also features a few moments of mild violence, including shooting (Civil War soldiers), explosions and poison dart-shooting (miniature Mayans).

The movie is rated PG by the MPAA for some mild action and language, with brief rude humor. It has some point-of-view camerawork that could startle younger viewers.

In addition to being an adventure film, Night at the Museum is a comedy that offers some good morals. It deals with themes such as loyalty, friendship, courage, divorced parents, responsibility and not giving up when it gets tough.

However, this film also includes a few scenes of frantic and cartoonish violence, including shooting (Civil War warriors), explosions and hunting (dinosaur skeletons and lions). It is recommended for kids aged 6 and up.

While this sequel to the beloved original Night at the Museum is not as funny as it could have been, it does offer a few good messages and is a lot of fun. The animation is a delight to watch and the voice cast includes an excellent array of actors.
