The Story

Noelle struggles to cope with her feelings, but her resolute spirit and dedication to her work are often the only things that keep her going.

Noelle loves to help people, and she is always there for anyone who needs her. She hopes to one day become a Knight of Favonius, and she takes her duty seriously even when she is feeling under-qualified for the role. Noelle also loves to train hard, especially when she has a chance to work with her mentor Jean.

Noelle is the daughter of Kris Kringle, and as a child she has always been encouraged to take up the mantle of Santa Claus. But when her father dies five months before the story opens, Noelle's neurotic younger brother Nick (Bill Hader) takes up the reins. It's a stressful job, and Nick struggles with the training required to be Santa.

To help him cope, Noelle suggests he leave the North Pole for a vacation. He agrees, but then leaves without telling anyone.

A few days later, the elves at the North Pole begin to panic because of the absence of Nick. Noelle and her elf nanny Polly the Elf (Shirley MacLaine) track him down to a mall in Phoenix, where they leave their reindeer and sleigh as a Christmas exhibit. They find a private investigator, Jake Hapman (Kinglsey Ben-Adir), who helps them track Nick.

As they search, Noelle realizes that she is able to read people's emotions and determine whether they're naughty or nice by just talking with them. She also discovers that she can speak a variety of languages, including American Sign Language.

Noelle's strength is hidden in her petite form. She can lift a bookshelf with her one hand and not even break a sweat doing it. She can also heal herself and others with her elemental skill "Breastplate".

At the North Pole, Nick is no longer Santa Claus, but he is still in charge of distributing Christmas spirit. He has been training for the role with Noelle, their nerdy tech-based cousin Gabe (Billy Eichner), and the other elves.

He's doing a poor job, and the elves at the North Pole are beginning to panic. Noelle and her elf nanny, Polly, decide to go back to the North Pole to have Nick resume his duties, but the Elder Elves are reluctant to accept this.

Plot

When the North Pole's jolly old man dies, Noelle (Anna Kendrick) feels the pressure to be the next Santa. She's got the skills Nick lacks -- he can't get down chimneys, he's afraid of reindeer and he has no social skills. He's also way too set in his ways and way too strict with what counts as naughty and nice, which makes him a poor choice for the job.

When Nick goes missing, Noelle travels to Phoenix, Arizona to rescue him. She ends up stumbling into a flurry of subplots and wacky situations, but the main plot is fairly straightforward. She gets help from private detective Jake Hapman (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who shares custody of his son Alex with his ex-wife. She meets some other cynical people along the way, including a homeless mother and her deaf daughter who acknowledge her as Santa and make her feel better, enabling her to perform better in her duties.

While she's out looking for Nick, she ends up in a Phoenix mall where the manager Helen Rojas (Diana Maria Riva) allows her to take the sleigh and reindeer that they left at the North Pole with them as an exhibit. Noelle finds the sleigh and reindeer are a hit at the mall, so she stays and takes care of them while Helen gets them a place to stay and the reindeer get some much needed attention.

Noelle soon discovers that she can communicate in any language and she can tell by looking at someone if they're naughty or nice. She then starts taking a yoga class, where she makes friends with another instructor who helps her learn to speak American Sign Language.

Eventually she reunites with her brother and they go to the North Pole to resume their duties. She messes up a few times and her spirit is down, but she gets it together and is able to do the job well.

The movie is full of Christmas cuteness and it's good to see that it ends with a message, but some of the dialogue is awkward, particularly when it describes random things as "jolly" or "naughty" and the patriarchal system is antiquated even by elf standards. It's a little more entertaining when a Greek chorus of carolers add some musical commentary, but it's still a cloyingly sweet movie that can't quite find its footing.
