How to Watch Penguin Bloom Online

PENGUIN BLOOM is the true story of Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts), a young mother whose world is shattered when a serious accident leaves her paralyzed. She and her husband (ANDREW LINCOLN) and their three sons struggle to adjust to their new reality.

An unlikely ally enters their life in the form of an injured baby magpie they name Penguin. The bird's arrival makes a profound difference in the struggling family's lives.

They are warm-blooded

Penguins are warm-blooded birds that are similar to humans in that they have a normal body temperature of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. They can keep themselves warm in very cold conditions because they have a layer of fat under their skin called blubber and they also have feathers on top of this that overlap.

They can also maintain their temperature in icy cold water thanks to a technique called heat-exchange blood flow. This works by allowing warm blood to run to their flippers and feet, which in turn helps to transport colder blood to their heart. This counter-flow of blood is a phenomenal method that allows penguins to keep their feet and flippers from freezing while they are on the ice.

In addition to utilizing this technique, they also use their wings to help them stay warm. In photos and videos you will often see groups of penguins huddled together shoulder to shoulder with their wings tight against their bodies to keep each other warm.

Another interesting thing to note is that they are able to sense temperature differences between the air around them and their feet. This allows them to know when they are getting too hot or too cold.

These behaviors are very important for penguins because they can use them to help them survive in a variety of extreme conditions. They can even be found in hibernation for long periods of time to preserve energy for when it’s cold outside.

Lastly, penguins can be seen in courting behavior at their colonies during mating season. This is when males and females mate and raise chicks. These courting behaviors include singing, squawking and displaying a number of specialized displays that cement their bonds as they prepare for the life-long task of raising their chicks.

They have feathers

A former surfer, Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts) is paralyzed after a fall on vacation with her husband and three sons in director Glendyn Ivin’s Netflix original Penguin Bloom. Despite the help of her devoted family and the love of her photographer husband Cameron (Andrew Lincoln), Sam’s recovery is long and painful.

But when an abandoned baby magpie enters their lives, the pair bond in surprising ways. The bird shatters the gloomy atmosphere of their house, bringing with it laughter and hope.

It takes a lot of work to keep an infant bird alive, and this was no exception when Sam and her boys found the baby. They did a lot of research and received help from veterinary specialists. In addition, they made a special diet for the bird that was high in protein, so she could thrive without consuming a lot of insects.

The Blooms don’t keep the bird in a cage, but she’s free to wander around the house; they even allow her to eat out of people’s mugs and grow attached to one of their kids’ stuffed toys. It’s a bit silly, but it’s also mildly entertaining.

There’s a little CGI bird action here and there, but it’s all about the birds themselves. Eight different magpies play the role of Penguin, and they’re coached by Paul Mander, Magpie Trainer.

As an actress, Naomi Watts does a good job of channeling the spirit of Sam Bloom and bringing her to life. However, her performance is spoiled by scriptwriters Shaun Grant and Harry Cripps’ cringeworthy dialogue and a tendency to treat her as an inspirational example rather than a real person. Still, there’s a lot of heart in this film that’s based on a true story.

They have knees

A year after a near-fatal accident that left Sam Bloom paralyzed, her husband (ANDREW LINCOLN) and their three boys are still struggling to get their heads around her newfound status as a quadriplegic. Luckily for them, an unlikely ally enters their lives in the form of an injured baby magpie they name Penguin. Despite her initial reluctance to care for the feathered friend, Sam begins to bond with her companion, and the penguin makes an appearance in more ways than one.

A penguin's oh-so-famous leg is actually composed of a short femur, knee, tibia and fibula. Luckily for penguin enthusiasts, this configuration is topped by an impressively large volume of feathers. This explains the eponymous flutter-mizzur and the ilk of the penguin's best-of-the-rest. The only thing better than a penguin's legs is a penguin's tail. It also carries the most feathers per square centimeter of its body size. Nevertheless, it can't be denied that a bird with the largest feathered tail in the world is not going to be quite as fun to look at as its little brother. It might also be a bit harder to keep warm. That's why the penguin oh-so-famous is probably a good bet to remain in the same hemisphere as its cousins for some time to come.

They sleep a lot

In Penguin Bloom, actress Naomi Watts’s character Sam Bloom has been paralyzed and her family finds support from a rescued Australian Magpie chick. This adorable avian friend helps Sam to cope with her new situation and inspires her to move forward with her life, despite her limitations.

The bird, Penguin (the name she gave to the animal), was found by a boy called Noah when she was only a few weeks old and instantly became an important member of the Bloom family. At 3:30 every afternoon, Penguin would come running up to the children's house, chirping and singing her way to them.

It was this relationship with the bird that really helped Sam and her three boys - Rueben, 16, Noah, 14 and Oli, 12 - through the trauma of her accident, which left her paralysed from the chest down. They took to caring for the bird and letting her sing and dance with them as she grew in their lives.

In the book Penguin Bloom, written by Sam's husband Cameron and his photographer wife, Bradley Trevor Greive, they describe how Penguin acted as a constant source of strength, support and encouragement for their family. And while the film is based on their experiences, it also draws on the book’s own uplifting message that there is still hope in the world after a tragedy.

It's a modest, understated drama that will undoubtedly strike a chord with many audiences. It's no slam dunk, however, and its flaws are numerous. But it's a charming crowd-pleaser that at a normal at-capacity premiere would have earned hearty applause.
