When he was first approached about the idea of writing Groundhog Day, writer Danny Rubin wanted to write something that would grab the attention of producers and get him some meetings. He wrote a screenplay that would be less dark and more comedic than other projects he had worked on.

While Rubin had a hand in drafting the script, director Harold Ramis had more control over the final product. He added some comedy, removed the twist of Rita being stuck in a loop, and changed some of Rubin’s ideas.

It was a tough project to shoot, mainly due to the extreme cold conditions of the time. Murray and Ramis had a long battle over the movie, with Murray wanting to keep it more comedic, while Ramis was focused on the more serious aspects of the story.

Throughout production, Murray was bitten by a groundhog named Scooter multiple times. The bites were so painful that he needed anti-rabies injections.

The cast was also criticized for their performance. In particular, Andie MacDowell’s character, Rita Hanson, was overshadowed by Murray’s performance. This was a problem that was not rectified until the film’s final edit, according to IMDb.

Snow Day (1999)

It's a snow day in Syracuse, New York, and a massive snowfall is paralyzing the community. For the Brandston family, this is especially bad news. Tom, a television weatherman (Chevy Chase), is forced to spend his time at home on a snowy day, trying to keep his job while caring for his toddler son Randy. His wife Laura, a workaholic, is unable to get to work because of the snow.

Natalie, meanwhile, is determined to help preserve the snow day and has a dream: she and her friends plan to take down the mean Snowplow Man, who plows the streets so efficiently that there has never been another snow day in years. In the process, Natalie gets into trouble with Snowplow Man himself, who taunts her and attacks her. She and Chet devise a diversion that will allow them to sneak into the plow.

The kids' plan is a success, however, and the city regains its sense of order. Later, Hal plans to win the heart of Claire Bonner, the popular girl he has fallen in love with, and Lane explains that true love is not about finding someone you can stand to be around for ten minutes at a time; it's about being able to enjoy each other's company for a long, long time.

But the love story is short-lived; Hal's ardent crush soon breaks up with her loud jock boyfriend, Chuck, and Claire reclaims her sperm whale anklet from Hal. In the meantime, Hal finds Lane at a skating rink and apologizes to her for his lack of attention to her; she reaffirms that true love is about being able to enjoy each other's presence for a long, long time.

Nevertheless, the romance does have some appeal, and the fantasy elements associated with Natalie's quest to stop Snowplow Man provide some entertainment value. But the overall film is uneven and lacks any firmly-established path to its ultimate conclusion, making it feel as though it was intended to be one of those movies that fills the gap in the multiplexes at this time of year but doesn't quite succeed.

The Snowman (2004)
