How to Watch the NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is one of the most popular events in all of sports, offering fans a chance to see their favorite teams select the next great NFL players. But how does it work?

The process begins months before the draft, when scouts, coaches and general managers begin evaluating college football's top talent. Then, on draft day, the teams huddle in their draft war room to make their selections.

How the draft works

A draft is a time when general managers and other members of the team select players to fill their rosters. It’s the one day of the year when fans can watch their favorite teams make decisions that will shape the future of the NFL.

The draft is held over three days, with the first round being held on Thursday and the other two rounds on Friday and Saturday. Each team has a set amount of time to make their selections, with the decision period varying depending on whether the pick is a regular or compensatory pick.

Once a team has decided on its selection, the pick is relayed to a member of the team’s staff at Madison Square Garden who will submit it to an official. The team will then wait for a period of time before the next selection is made.

For the draft to work, there are some important rules that need to be followed. The first rule is that each team is allowed to have a certain number of draft picks, which can vary from seven to 16 depending on the trades that are made before and during the draft.

Another important rule is that each team is given a certain number of compensatory picks, which are given to teams that lose free agents and are awarded based on their salary, playing time and postseason awards from the previous year. These picks are often worth more than the original pick and can help a team get some valuable players without having to pay a high price.

To calculate the value of a draft pick, the NFL uses a chart called “The Chart.” The chart is a guide to how much each pick is worth. While it can be helpful for determining draft strategies, it also has its critics.

The six teams eliminated on Wild Card Weekend receive picks between picks 19-24, while the four teams eliminated in the Divisional Round are assigned picks 25-28.

It's always a fun watch to see which teams will end up with the top picks in the draft. With the NFL's unusually active free agent period and the Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams trades, it's difficult to predict how draft day will play out.

Typically, the draft order is projected by a computer model called the FPI. This model simulates the rest of the season 10,000 times and then uses that information to project the draft order. In May 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Selective Service Act, establishing a national system of local and state draft boards to induct or defer conscripted men. He later made it a criminal offense to miss a required deadline or not register for the draft. By the time the draft ended, some 45 million men had registered and more than 10 million had been inducted.
