How to Watch the Tony Awards

If you love Broadway, you'll want to tune in to the Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12th. The 75th annual ceremony will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and will feature showstopping performances from a variety of Broadway stars.

The first hour of the show will be hosted by Darren Criss and Julianne Hough, which you can stream live on Paramount Plus (a subscription service). If you're abroad or outside the US, you can use a VPN to watch the event.

Red carpet coverage

Broadway's biggest night is upon us, and stars from the stage and screen are ready to hit the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall. It's a chance for theater to shine, despite a season that was plagued by COVID-19 outbreaks and several cancellations.

This year's red carpet was a celebration of Broadway's resurgence and glitzy aesthetic, which was evident in the elegant evening gowns and serious suiting that were spotted throughout. It's also a celebration of the theater's resilient spirit, which was apparent in the star-studded list of presenters.

The Tony Awards are presented by the Broadway League, a trade association that represents theater owners and producers, and the American Theater Wing, a theater advocacy organization. The awards ceremony honors Broadway productions that have opened between February 20, 2020, and May 4, 2022, with awards given for various categories of performances and contributions.

There are 11 nominations this year, including one for best play and a special award for lifetime achievement. This year's nominees include the musicals A Strange Loop, Company, Girl From the North Country, MJ, Mr. Saturday Night, Paradise Square and Six: The Musical.

Aside from the nominations, the night will also honor performers whose work has been affected by the recent national racial unrest. There's a posthumous tribute to Stephen Sondheim, who died in March; actor Skylar Astin paid tribute to Covid safety workers after this season's pandemic wreaked havoc on the theatre; and actors Marcia Gay Harden and Marvin "Statue" Spivey were both nominated for lead performance awards.

In addition to the nominees and performers, there will be a number of surprise guests who will attend the show. Some of these include singer-actress Cynthia Erivo, who is a newly minted EGOT winner for her role as producer of the musical "A Strange Loop." Actor Sam Rockwell will also be there.

Among the other honorees at this year's ceremony will be musical theater legend Angela Lansbury, who will receive the special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theater. Other notables expected to attend include Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will be honored for his contribution to Broadway, and Bryan Cranston, who will receive a tribute to his late father, the actor and director Robert Cranston.

Nominations

The Tony Awards are the biggest event on Broadway's calendar, and this year's lineup is sure to deliver a big night. With a line-up that includes Sam Rockwell, Laurence Fishburne, Billy Crystal, Daniel Craig and Sarah Jessica Parker among many others, it's a sure bet that this will be the most entertaining Tonys ceremony to date!

If you want to watch this year's show, there are a few ways to do so. First, you can watch the live broadcast on CBS and Paramount+. You can also access the awards through local cable providers such as Xfinity and Cox Cable. Another option is to use a streaming service such as Hulu + Live TV, Direct TV Stream or Fubo + Live TV.

Alternatively, you can watch the Tonys on the official website or YouTube channel. Those who aren't in New York can still catch the show by streaming it on their TVs, or through their phones or tablets via a livestream from a friend in another state.

Nominations for the Tony Awards are announced by the American Theatre Wing, a nonprofit that promotes theater. The nominations will be announced via livestream on Monday morning by Adrienne Warren and Joshua Henry, who previously won a Tony for Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

The nominations for this year's Tony Awards are divided into categories: Best Play, Best Musical, and the Best Lead Actor category for both plays and musicals. The winners will be announced at the 75th Annual Tony Awards on June 12 in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

This year’s nominations include shows like Girl From The North Country, MJ, Mr. Saturday Night, Paradise Square and SIX: The Musical, as well as Hugh Jackman’s jukebox musical MJ. The list of nominees is long and diverse, but it’s clear that the competition for this year’s award is as fierce as ever.

In addition to the nominations for Best Play, there are also nominations for a handful of other awards. The Best Lead Actor in a Musical category includes Billy Crystal as Buddy Young Jr. in Mr. Saturday Night, Myles Frost as Michael Jackson in MJ, Rob McClure as Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire in Mrs. Doubtfire, and Jacquel Spivey as Usher in A Strange Loop.

Performances

One of the most exciting parts of the Tony Awards every year is watching the performances from nominated Broadway shows. It's a chance to see some of the biggest hits from the current season, including special award winners and buzzy fan-favorites.

It's also a great chance to get a glimpse at new musicals that are just starting to make their way onto the Broadway stage. And it's a great way to see some of the best performers in the business, too!

Perennial Broadway baby Bernadette Peters (Mama Rose in Sam Mendes' 2003 Gypsy) had to deal with vocal trouble before the show started, but she roared back in a fiercely committed performance of "Rose's Turn." Her voice was full of hurt and anger, and she delivered it with such conviction that she made the audience feel her pain.

The cast of the hit revival of Les Miserables took a moment during their performance to pay tribute to the original Broadway production's 1991 Tonys performance. They performed a sequence that paid homage to the French pop opera's opening number, and the ensemble was on fire!

And of course, no Tonys would be complete without a few classic Broadway numbers. John Lloyd Young, who is playing Frankie Valli in the hit revival of Jersey Boys, gave an incredible performance of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "Who Loves You," singing nearly identical to his original role.

Another Tonys highlight was the performance from 2020's Best Musical winner Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which opened on Broadway in July of that year and swept the awards. Its cast was incredibly fun to watch, and the show's set is a sight to behold.

There were also a bunch of performances from the nominees for Best Musical, like A Strange Loop, Company, Girl from the North Country, MJ, Mr. Saturday Night, Paradise Square and Six: The Musical, so make sure to check them out if you're planning on seeing the awards!

Aside from the best musicals, there were a lot of great performances from actors and writers, too. Audra McDonald leads all performers with six Tonys, followed by Harvey Fierstein and Tom Stoppard with four. And Liza Minelli is the youngest actress to win a Tony, for her performance in Flora the Red Menace.

Finale

If you’re a diehard fan of the show, you know that the final season of “The Sopranos” was a high water mark for television storytelling. Its finale – an epic and ambiguous scene that left many viewers in a state of utter confusion – is still considered one of the best of its kind. And the episode’s final moments are particularly memorable, thanks to the way Chase chose to film them.

When Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and his family eat onion rings at Holsten’s restaurant, a song plays, cutting off just before the lyrics “Don’t stop believing.” The scene is accompanied by 10 seconds of black screen before the credits roll. It’s a eerie, ambiguous moment that symbolizes the boss’s failures in life.

In a similar manner to the final scene of “The Godfather,” a man walks into the bathroom behind Holsten’s. He then holds a gun, mirroring the conversation Bobby Baccalieri had with Tony a few episodes earlier about how he would kill him if he had to.

This is a move that could have been a coincidence, but it’s also an iconic symbol of the show’s finale. In addition to showcasing the ominous final moments of “The Sopranos,” the sequence also reflects a number of other scenes that Chase and other creators used throughout the final season as symbols of a character’s downfall.

Another example: In "The Blue Comet," a scene in which Bobby is killed on the orders of an opposing mob boss, we see him hold the gun he gave his son for his birthday, and the camera cuts to the line, “You probably don’t even hear it.” We also see this same line a few episodes later as Silvio Dante (Steven Van Zandt) prepares for a trial after he was arrested. It’s a subtle nod to the fact that Tony is now facing a possible indictment, but it also symbolizes his failed attempts to put an end to those crimes.

The Tony Awards are a huge event on Broadway, and both Julia Swift (Emma Larkin) and Tom Swift (Terry Kinney) are writing acceptance speeches for the upcoming ceremony. It’s an opportunity that Julia hopes will give her a chance at a career breakthrough that she might never have again.
