I Am Patrick (DVD) Review

I Am Patrick is a new docudrama that peels back centuries of legend and myth to tell the true story of Saint Patrick. Featuring historical re-enactments, expert interviews and Patrick’s own writings, it explores the man behind the saint.

The movie, starring Lord of the Rings’ John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, traces the man’s journey from kidnapped slave to patron saint of Ireland. It also delves into his many divine visions and dreams.

Storyline

When Patrick was a teenager in the 5th century, the Roman Empire was collapsing and barbarians were threatening civilization. He was living a comfortable life as the son of a government official and was part of the Roman Catholic Church, which didn’t mean much to him until he was kidnapped by pirates at the age of 16 and enslaved in Ireland.

This movie reveals the story of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and an early leader of the Catholic Church. Through historical reenactments, expert interviews and his own writings, I Am Patrick traces the journey from man to saint.

The story of Saint Patrick is a fascinating one and this film does a good job of revealing the details of his life. It also gives viewers a real sense of how brutal life must have been in the early 400s A.D.

While Patrick’s main mission in Ireland was to spread Christianity, he didn’t always follow the rules of the Catholic Church. Consequently, he was subject to harsh hostility from many within the Church.

During his time in Ireland, he baptized thousands and started churches throughout the country. He fought against Irish kings, slavers and druids, but nothing compared to the hostility he faced from fellow Christians.

For example, he wrote a letter that rebuked the Church’s false claims. He emphasized that it was God who led him to Ireland, not the Church or the Irish kings.

Another story from his time is that he went on a fast for 40 days, like Moses did on Mount Sinai. He climbed the Cruachan Aigle mountain and was harassed by a snake, but ultimately he ended his fast by banishing it into a hollow.

The film reveals the true story of Saint Patrick, who was born to a deacon and tax collector in Britain in the fifth century. He was kidnapped by pirates and enslaved in Ireland at the age of 16.

When Patrick was a teenager, he was a dissolute youth, playing craps, learning Latin, and experimenting with drugs. He had a strong desire to become a priest. Fortunately, Patrick was eventually saved by a prophetic dream and was called back to Ireland to help spread Christianity.

Cast

In the 5th century, as barbarians and the collapse of the Roman empire threatened civilization, a young British man named Patrick was enjoying a fairly typical life. He was a son of a government official, and spent his days doing intense study or playing games. But at the age of 16, his world was turned upside down when pirates attacked his village and he was seized as a slave.

While his family was nominally Christian, he didn't see much need for God in his life. But when he was captured and enslaved in Ireland, Patrick suddenly had an epiphany that changed everything. He was a spiritual convert and he was now on a mission to spread Christianity to the Irish people.

He had a number of divine visions and dreams, and one dream in particular inspired him to flee from his enslavers. Another one, when he's a prisoner on a ship returning to Britain, inspired him to evangelize his fellow inmates. He tries to tell them that they'll find food in heaven, but their captain mocks him.

The film's director, Jarrod Anderson, did a good job of paying close attention to detail in this film, which is set in fifth-century Ireland and shot on location in an authentic fifth-century villa. He did an excellent job of capturing the squalor and beauty of that time.

As far as drama goes, I Am Patrick is a bit uneven. There are a couple of moments when Patrick is nearly killed by sword-carrying soldiers, and there are some pretty tragic scenes that show the impact of slavery raids. But the acting is generally competent, and the expert consultants and the narrator are a good complement to the drama.

A good deal of the film is dedicated to reenactments of key events. This makes the movie feel very believable, and the camera work is impressive. But it also sometimes stretches the truth too far, especially when Patrick is a child.

The film does a good job of blending the live-action and documentary elements into a compelling story, with Moe Dunford's narration helping to keep the pace moving along. The actors are able to capture the excitement and determination that Patrick consistently displayed. This combination of live-action and documentary also helps to highlight some of the less well-known aspects of Patrick's life.

Audience engagement

There are a number of ways to measure audience engagement in the performing arts. These include post-performance questionnaires, audience interviews and focus groups. However, these approaches are essentially retrospective and may be limited to one-off experiences. Developing real-time measures of audience response can help organizations address these limitations and offer a new perspective on the dynamics of their audience responses.

The primary conventional opportunity for audience members to express their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with a performance is through applause and/or cheering. But these responses can also be expressed in a range of other ways that may not be consciously visible to performers.

As a result, researchers have found that audience body movements can be a powerful predictor of engagement. This is because they display a variety of hand gestures, such as thumb and finger moves, which can provide performers with a specific, distinct and salient response cue (Broth, 2011; Wagener, 2012).

To investigate whether these hand movements are a reliable predictor of engagement, we analyzed video clips showing the audience in different states. We found that audience members are most engaged when they move less than the average of the other audience members.

We tested this relationship between hand movement and engagement by analyzing short clips of the audience in four different performance parts. We used a Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) to analyze the relationship between the audience's movement and their level of engagement.

In addition, we compared the levels of happiness and anger displayed by the audience in each performance part. We found that the audience displayed more happiness during the applause sections and less anger during the non-performance sections. This was because the participants were more likely to smile and laugh during those sections.

In a GLMM, we tested for the effect of the movement state and connection of participants to dance on the engagement scores. The model showed that movement state was significantly related to the engagement score (Chi-sq = 95, p 0.01) with participants rating the audience clips where the audience was moving less as the most engaging.

Recommendations

If you're a fan of historical drama, then you'll enjoy this film about Saint Patrick. It combines documentary and live-action elements, telling the story of Patrick's life from his earliest days to his final days. The movie features reenactments, expert interviews and Patrick's own writings.

The story of Patrick is a fascinating one, and this film does an excellent job presenting it. It gives a real sense of what it must have been like for the Irish in the fifth century, when civilization was sparse and tribal. It also demonstrates how Patrick fought against the Irish kings, druids and slavers.

There are some moments of high tension throughout the movie. The moment when Patrick tries to dodge a sword-carrying soldier is particularly dramatic and heart-wrenching. And the scene in which Patrick visits a Christian compound and finds several dead bodies is quite moving.

What makes this movie different from many other historical dramas is that it eschews romanticization. The viewer is shown a brutal world in which it's hard to imagine how people could survive. The film also shows how Patrick grew in faith, converting thousands of Irish pagans to Christianity.

At the end of his ministry, Patrick wrote a letter of defense called "A Confessio," in which he rebuked the Catholic Church's false claims and held firm to the path that Jesus laid out for him. The movie includes the Confessio and other writings from Patrick's time, as well as interviews with scholars.

The actors playing Patrick are able to convey his zeal and energy. They also capture the way that Patrick's convictions always came before his feelings and emotions.

I Am Patrick also includes some excellent narration by Moe Dunford, which helps keep the pace of the film moving along. The film focuses on Patrick's journey from man to saint, and it does an excellent job of reenacting important moments in his life.

As we can see from this movie, Patrick was a mighty man. His actions against Irish kings and druids helped change the face of Ireland. But it is worth noting that his efforts were hampered by a sin that he committed in his youth that was deemed unpardonable.
