The first trailer for Impeachment: American Crime Story, starring Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky, Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp and Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton, has dropped. The anthology series follows the scandals that led to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998.

Synopsis

Monica Lewinsky is an ambitious White House intern who finds herself in the middle of a scandal that could cost her her job and her life. She is ensnared in an affair with President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) and becomes a target for conservative activists who want to impeach him.

Her closest confidante Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson) is a disgruntled White House staffer who finds herself transferred to the Pentagon where she meets Monica. While Tripp believes she is working on a tell-all book about Vince Foster, who died in a plane crash after sexually assaulting Linda, her feelings are complicated when she discovers that she is also involved with Lewinsky.

She soon realizes that Tripp is working with Ken Starr, the attorney who is investigating the president, to try and make her and her husband look guilty. Eventually, she decides to testify in Starr's investigation against her husband in exchange for immunity.

Despite this, she is smeared with a lot of bad press for her relationship with the president and the scandal engulfs the country. As she is pursued by the media and the conservative movement, Lewinsky struggles to move on with her life.

While her mother Marcia Lewis and her lawyer Bill Ginsburg attempt to protect her, she is pressured to commit perjury and her father eventually hires a team of lawyers to try and get her full immunity in return for her testimony. Eventually, she testsifies before the grand jury and is repeatedly questioned and shamed for her relationship with Clinton.

This version of the story does not fit the scathing characterizations of Lewinsky that were popular in the 1990s, nor is she the cartoon version she became in her book, but this third installment offers a messy yet ultimately engrossing version of the scandal. With a cast of strong characters and an expertly crafted script by executive producer and head writer Sarah Burgess, Impeachment manages to keep this story on track with an unflinching fidelity to facts, while still offering us a more personal portrait than most TV dramas do.

Beanie Feldstein is known for her roles as Lady Bird's Amy Schumer and Jonah Hill's sister in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. She also appeared in the short-lived TV show How to Build a Girl and is currently starring in FX's American Horror Story.

The actress has a knack for creating compelling characters, which she showcases in her new role as Lewinsky. She said in a press conference for the series that she hoped viewers would see "her as an individual, not just as a woman who was caught up in this mess."

It's a painfully authentic portrayal of Lewinsky's anguish, and it comes from an actor who is able to bring more nuance to her part than Paulson or Owen, despite the relative restraint of her makeup.

This is a film that deserves to be seen, and it's not just for fans of the subject. It's an excellent example of why it's important to pay attention to the way women are treated online.
