Created by Simone Finch, Single Drunk Female is a TV series about a woman who struggles with addiction. The series stars Sofia Black-D'Ehlia as the titular character and follows her journey to sobriety after a public drunken breakdown.

The series follows Sam (Sofia Black-D'Elia) after she finds herself in rehab after a dangerous bender. Now she's working on rebuilding her life and trying to stay sober. She navigates recovery meetings, probation, a new job, dating life, reconciling with those she wronged, and living with her mom.

Ultimately, Single Drunk Female is an ensemble comedy: it's not about Samantha alone; her friends and family have their own lives and problems to deal with. But it's also about her coming to terms with who she is without alcohol, relearning how to be a writer, a daughter, a friend.

Sofia Black-D'Elia does an amazing job of selling Sam as a high-functioning alcoholic who rebuilds her life in a healthy manner. She's a likable heroine with a grittier side that's worth rooting for. She also doesn't shy away from a harrowing episode in which she dreamed of her deceased father, revealing the strength she must have to keep going when all she wants to do is run away and drink.

Despite its flaws, Single Drunk Female is a must-watch for anyone looking for a funny, heartfelt look at the hard stuff of recovery. With a great lead performance from Black-D'Elia and Simone Finch's smart take on addiction, it's a series that makes its mark as more than just a typical drama.

Season 2

Initially airing on Freeform, Single Drunk Female has quickly become a fan favorite. It follows a drunken single mother (Sofia Black-D’Elia) who finds herself living back in her hometown to avoid jail time and sober up.

Episode 10 begins with Sam waking up to a dream about her dad, who worries about her being one year sober. She then wakes up and goes to her mom’s for help getting ready for Brit’s wedding. When she gets to the venue, she realizes that James hasn’t show up. She’s surprised and upset.

Season 3

Freeform has officially ordered Single Drunk Female for a second season, and it’s looking like the network will continue to focus on dark comedy. It has also picked up While You Were Breeding, a series based on Kristin Newman’s memoir “What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding,” which will star Chelsea Frei.

The show’s premise is not what you might expect from a basic cable channel, especially one like Freeform. It takes a look at the consequences of a woman who struggles with an addiction to alcohol. Instead of a character drinking to oblivion, it shows a woman who is struggling to overcome her problem and rebuild her life.

Season 4

Back in Greater Boston, Sam sets out on a path to move past her worst self and figure out her best.

It’s a messy journey and the show doesn’t shy away from the emotional rollercoaster that alcoholic recovery can be. But Single Drunk Female is a series that offers relatable characters, heartfelt moments and the occasional light comedy to keep us watching.

The first season of Single Drunk Female began airing on Freeform in January 2022 and ended with episode 10 on March 17th. Now the network has greenlit the series for a second season alongside new YA dramedy While You Were Breeding.

As Sam tries to move forward and rebuild her life, she encounters various triggers that lead to alcoholism. These include her overbearing mother, her new job at a grocery store and a recent run-in with her former best friend who is dating her ex.

Fortunately, she has the support of her friends. Among them is Mindy, Sam’s grocery store boss who also works in the program and is a strong supporter of her sobriety.

With her friends’ constant reassurances, Sam reaches her goal of a year sober. But her progress isn’t without pitfalls: Her roommates don’t appreciate her sobriety, and she finds herself at a loss when it comes to her relationships.

In the fourth season, Single Drunk Female continues to be a funny and poignant look at the intersection of being single, drunk and female. And thanks to Sofia Black-D’Elia’s performance, we find ourselves rooting for her and her road to sobriety.
