Plot

What starts off as a standard romantic comedy slowly devolves into a weird mystery.

Writer-director Jeff Baena (Horse Girl, The Little Hours) has a knack for making off-kilter comedies, but his latest effort, Spin Me Round, feels even more messy than usual. Bringing together his frequent collaborator Alison Brie and a cast that includes top-drawer comic actors, Spin Me Round dances around a number of genre cliches and tones, but doesn’t always know what it wants to be.

The film opens with Amber (Brie), an Italian-American manager at the Olive Garden-like restaurant chain Tuscan Grove, winning a trip to Italy. As she takes a ride on a boat with her boss, Nick (Alessandro Nivola), she finds herself seduced by his lavish lifestyle and sexy demeanor. The film effectively deconstructs the toxic 'rich boy, poor girl' trope that plagues countless romantic movies (Fifty Shades of Grey, Pretty Woman, Maid in Manhattan).

But while Spin Me Round cleverly plays with its cultural homogeneity, it doesn’t quite figure out how to effectively build toward a memorable climax or plant the kind of intriguing seeds that keep viewers engaged all the way up to the moment when artificial alfredo sauce finally hits the fan. Ultimately, it’s a meandering, laughless and aimless comedy that doesn’t have the guts to say what it wants to.

Once she arrives in Italy, Amber meets the other winners of the program and quickly gets swept up in their own idiosyncrasies. Deb (Shannon), for instance, is obsessed with lost luggage. She also suffers from a serious case of “workplace anxiety.” Her roommate Emily (Ego Nwodim) is an overbearing, socially awkward social worker who’s just as determined to get Amber to have fun with her.

Despite the talented ensemble, some of the movie’s jokes are too long and many situations don’t make much sense. For example, Amber ends up in a relationship with an unhinged local art/swinger (Fred Armisen) and falls for the local artist’s daughter Kat (Molly Shannon).

But while Amber’s adventures in Italy are entertaining, they’re not nearly as fun as the ones she has with her wacky friends. The movie tries to juggle too many plot elements, including Amber’s work trip, her #MeToo nightmare, a sex romp and a raunchy sex romp, but it never really makes all of these things click. Moreover, Amber’s character doesn’t have much to do with the rest of the movie, as Baena and Brie have written her as almost a blank slate. This isn’t a bad thing, but it does limit the film’s ability to explore its themes with the same level of sensitivity.
