The Giver - A Review

In The Giver, a young boy named Jonas lives in a society that is colorless, equalized and seemingly perfect. He is chosen to be a Receiver, and is taught about life in the past by an elderly mentor.

The film is loosely based on Lois Lowry’s novel of the same name, and while it does some reworking, it keeps the main core of the story intact. It’s also a good example of how book-to-screen adaptations don’t always have to be carbon copies of the original text.

1. Watch it on a big screen

A new adaptation of Lois Lowry’s acclaimed young adult novel, The Giver, is coming to theaters this summer. The film, directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt), stars Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Taylor Swift as a society that has seemingly perfected itself by banishing war, crime and other negative aspects of life.

The world is governed by a group of Elders who decide the fate of the community. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is chosen by the Chief Elder to become a Receiver of Memory, the one person who can understand the painful truths that have been left behind. The grueling task of learning the memory of all those who have passed on to the other side comes at a price, as he discovers that his new society isn’t so happy after all.

While The Giver is an interesting take on the dystopian genre, it also suffers from the problem of sameness, a hallmark of many recent YA novels and movies. As a result, it’s difficult to appreciate what Lowry was trying to say about conformity and the effects of sameness on people in a tumultuous age.

But the movie’s slow, often tedious and largely unnecessary pace never stops it from delivering a powerful story about the repercussions of sameness and how it can be overcome. As Jonas learns about the pain and loss that has been left behind, he’s able to make decisions that can help him lead his people into freedom.

Ultimately, The Giver is an important film that families can watch together. It’s one that can help children and teens understand that while the world can be scary and unfriendly, it can still be a place where people come together to help each other and have fun.

It’s also a good choice for fans of the book, especially those who have read it and are looking for a more immersive experience than what they can get from reading the original. But the movie does have some differences from the book, including the age of Jonas, so it’s important to know whether your child is ready for a darker story before they see the film.

2. Watch it on a TV

The giver is a science fiction tale a la Star Wars with a futuristic twist. The gist of the story is that Jonas (Jesse James) and his guardian angel Lily (Elizabeth Olsen) find themselves in a world free of pain, suffering and most importantly choice. This is the story of a young boy's quest to understand his place in the universe, and it's a tweener's dream come true. It's not hard to see why this was a bestseller when it debuted in 2014. The Giver is available for rent or purchase on Amazon video, Netflix, Vudu and iTunes. You can also find it on your favorite cable, satellite or fiber provider in the form of a video on demand. This is one of those movies you'll want to watch again and again.

3. Watch it on a tablet

One of the most popular kids books on the market, The Giver is based on the book by Lois Lowry and tells the story of Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) who is sent to an isolated society that appears to be perfect at first. However, the society soon begins to crack as individuals are stripped of their individuality and forced to fit in with others. With Veronica Roth's Divergent hitting the cinema this weekend and Jeff Bridges' Ender's Game set to make its debut this year, 2014 is looking like a huge year for dystopian novels.

A tablet is a mobile computing device that can be used to read books, play games, watch movies and handle email. They usually have a touchscreen that is controlled by a finger or a plastic stylus. You can also use them to view websites and interact with apps. They come with a number of default apps, but you can install and delete more from the tablet's app store or dock.

4. Watch it on a phone

The Giver, based on the Nebula award winning novel of the same name, is a must watch for Sci-Fi fans. While it’s not a groundbreaking film in the grand scheme of things, it manages to mix a few of the science fiction aforementioned gimmicks you’d expect with a story that will keep you enthralled. It has a star-studded cast led by Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and the incomparable Brenton Thwaites. It also uses a lot of clever technology to tell a story about a utopian society with no war and no hunger. Despite some of the technological gizmos and clever marketing, it doesn’t quite have the same oomph as the book it was based on.
