How to Watch Blazing Saddles Online

Mel Brooks' classic 1974 comedy satirizes the racism and sexism embedded in the Western genre. It's also one of the most influential movies ever made, influencing generations of filmmakers.

Blazing Saddles was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Film Registry for preservation in 2006. It's still a must-watch for comedy fans, whether you're a first-time viewer or celebrating your 50th.

Streaming

Streaming is the process of delivering content over the internet to a computer or mobile device without having to download it. This can be done for a wide variety of media, including movies and videos, music, podcasts, and live events. Streaming technology has become very popular, with most people using it to watch TV and movies online.

There are a few different types of streaming, which all work differently. Some streams are free, while others require a subscription. The type of service you choose depends on the content you want to watch and your personal needs.

While you can download movies to your computer, it's often faster and easier to watch them via streaming services. This is because a stream sends data in small packets instead of downloading the entire file. This reduces the amount of time it takes for the files to download, and the quality of the audio or video is better.

However, streaming services do have their own problems, including buffering. This happens when a program's temporary memory (called a buffer) fills up with the next piece of information to be downloaded, and your internet connection isn't fast enough to keep up. This can cause a number of errors, such as the movie not playing or the audio or video being cut off.

This can happen with many types of streaming, including Netflix and Hulu. Streaming can also be affected by the location of the servers hosting the video content. For example, if you're in New York and your stream comes from a server in Los Angeles, the video may take longer to load and could be lower in quality.

Aside from the problem of buffering, streaming also uses up bandwidth quickly. This is because the data is being sent over the internet, and it can take a while to travel over long distances. It's especially bad for audio or video, which are often more sensitive to latency than other types of media.

It's important to choose a streaming service that offers high-quality content. You'll also want to consider your internet speed and whether you can afford the fees involved.

DVD

Blazing Saddles is a film that deserves to be rewatched often, and this DVD edition is a great way to experience the timeless comedy. It offers a commentary track, a making-of documentary, and even a section from a special on the late Madeline Kahn.

The 1974 classic is a favorite among comedians and fans of the Old West, and its legacy has inspired several animated movies. It’s a must-have for anyone who wants to see one of the funniest comedies ever made.

Mel Brooks and his cowriter Andrew Bergman drew inspiration from old Westerns and loaded their pockets with fist-sized handfuls of the smart-ass irreverence of the New Hollywood films that gave birth to the Marx Brothers. The result was a satire that pokes wildly at the genre’s most enduring themes, but that never crosses into mean-spirited territory.

For all the raucous hilarity, however, the movie also tackles an important racial issue: how a black sheriff can be accepted into an all-white town. Historically, this has been an especially difficult step for African-Americans to take in American society, whether it be in the military or in politics.

In Blazing Saddles, Sheriff Bart (Cleavon Little) earns the respect of a racist rabble by invoking the name of Western actor Randolph Scott and then enlisting the help of a town-square hangman to give him a legitimate leg up. It’s the same kind of winking, nodding, and back-handing that Brooks did in his 1970s comedy The Producers.

But he goes further, tying all this into the larger comic spectacle of a town trying to make its way through a railroad corridor while a robber baron and his henchmen try to wreak havoc. That’s where the magic of Brooks’ Old West parody lies.

It’s a laugh-out-loud delight, with everyone in the cast turning up to make it happen. And that’s all without sacrificing the integrity of the story.

Aside from its acerbic humor, Blazing Saddles is an essential film for its ability to show how the world has changed since it was first released in 1974. It’s a prescient satire that still holds up today, as our own failings are still being mocked.

Blu-ray

Mel Brooks’ Western parody Blazing Saddles is turning 40 tomorrow, and while it remains one of the funniest films ever made, it also has a lot to say about racism. In fact, the film is not only a riotous spoof of the genre, it’s also a blistering indictment of our nation’s racial biases.

Featuring a stellar cast including Cleavon Little, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn, Blazing Saddles is a fiendishly funny spoof of Westerns, but it’s also a subversive take on modern America. The film’s use of racial slurs is both brash and out of step with our culture, but it also is a piercing indictment of the racist attitudes of its day.

While the movie is a bit rough around the edges, its over-the-top jabs at racism are still hilarious and the film’s final battle between the townsfolk of Rock Ridge and Lamarr’s thugs is a rousing Busby Berkeley-style musical number that breaks the fourth wall and spills out into Burbank Studios. It’s a scene that arguably put Blazing Saddles on the map and it remains a seminal moment in the history of comedy.

The film was originally released in mono, but was later remixed to Dolby Digital 5.1 for the 30th Anniversary DVD. The original Blu-ray release has also included a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack.

It’s a decent upgrade over the mono audio on the original standard DVD, but it still lacks a little punch. In fact, Casey Broadwater’s review of the 2006 disc noted that the audio had a “very weak low end.” This transfer does a good job of matching the source material in terms of color and contrast, but the aging dialog still makes it feel like it’s being compressed.

On the plus side, the Blu-ray includes a few new extras, but they aren’t as good as those found on the standard DVD. There’s a short 3-minute excerpt from Lifetime’s “Intimate Portrait: Madeline Kahn” and a set of 10 art cards that feature quotes from the film.

As mentioned above, a clean up of the original transfer and some extras would be nice, but as it is, this version of blazing saddles is worth adding to your collection if you already own a copy. If you don’t, a rental should be fine as well.

The movie was a satirical and well received take on the Old West that pokes fun at machismo and cowboy culture.

The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime. This is where you’ll find the best deal for this classic from director Mel Brooks and his cast. You can buy a Blu-ray copy or stream it to your devices from the comfort of your home.
