When a trio of black female soul singers cross over to the pop charts in the early 1960s, they face their own personal struggles. Based on the 1981 Broadway musical, Dreamgirls tells a fictional story about the evolution of American R&B music.

Eventually, she decides to leave the group and begin her own solo career. She is a powerful, talented and popular singer.

They lose the contest but their singing catches the attention of a sly talent agent who gets them signed as a backup group for James Thunder Early, a rising pop star.

They soon tour, perform with Jimmy, and win acclaim. But Curtis soon turns on his fellow talent manager Marty, who is trying to push Jimmy onto the mainstream pop charts. Using his connections with the mob, Curtis promises Jimmy that he can make him a Perry Como-esque pop singer. He also promises Jimmy that he can help him cross over from 'Race' music to the mainstream pop charts.

Initially, the act's success is slow, and they only break into the top ten in one song. But with the help of a songwriter Effie's brother C.C., the Dreamettes record a hit song that becomes a cult classic. But as the group starts to gain momentum, a white group does a cover of their song and steals their thunder. This leads to a fight between Curtis and Marty, who leaves Jimmy's management and Curtis takes over the Dreamettes.

As their career progresses, the Dreamettes become more sophisticated and sultry with the help of Curtis's direction. Their act is renamed The Dreams and Deena Jones, a sexy beauty who is able to sing the most beautifully, is moved into Effie's lead spot instead of Effie herself.

While Curtis is trying to transform the Dreamettes into a big time black pop group, he neglects the girls' friendships and family lives. He pressures them to join Early on the road, tries to sabotage Effie's marriage, and even makes an effort to turn her friend Deena into a lead singer in his new group.
