This group of performers was assembled after their Broadway performances in the play, which received Tony Awards for both Washington and Davis as Best Actor and Best Actress.

It is not often that a stage-to-screen adaptation succeeds as beautifully as Fences does, but the work done here is worthy of praise. It's a challenging and rewarding film that pays homage to the source material, but also offers new depths for the characters in Wilson's evocative script.

While it's a safe bet that Washington and Davis will be nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress, the rest of the movie doesn't seem to care too much about being Oscar-bait. It isn't as flamboyant and over-the-top as many of the other Oscar contenders, but it has an undeniable gravitas that makes this one of the most compelling films to watch in 2016. This is the kind of film that should be on every awards season watch list.
