The first Pink Moon of the year is a Supermoon and will be seen in several parts of the world. Observers can enjoy the celestial phenomenon until early Monday morning.

The Pink Moon is named after a flower herb called moss pink, which blooms in April and is native to North America. The full moon also goes by the names Sprouting Grass Moon, Fish Moon and Egg Moon, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

It’s a supermoon

Supermoons are rare astronomical events that occur three or four times a year. They happen when the moon’s orbit is closest to Earth — that is, it passes through its perigee stage, which is a point in its elliptical orbit when it is closest to our planet.
