How to Watch Shining Girls Online

If you're looking for a new drama to watch, then look no further than the acclaimed series Shining Girls. Starring Elisabeth Moss, it's a genre-blending TV adaptation of Lauren Beukes' best-selling novel.

Set in Chicago in the early 1990s, the story follows newspaper archivist Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss), who is left confused and disoriented after surviving an attack. When she finds out that a murder is linked to her case, she teams up with journalist Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) to solve the mystery.

Apple TV Plus

If you’re a fan of The Handmaid’s Tale actress Elisabeth Moss, the new thriller series Shining Girls is worth checking out. The series, based on Lauren Beukes’ bestselling novel of the same name, is set in Chicago and stars Moss and Wagner Moura.

The premise revolves around Kirby Mazrachi (Moss), a newspaper archivist who was a victim of a brutal attack that left her traumatized. She’s now living a reality that shifts constantly, with events replaying in her head as she tries to make sense of the trauma. She also draws links between her scars and those of other women killed in the same fashion as her attacker, putting her one step closer to the killer she wants to catch.

Once she realizes a murder is linked to her attack, she teams up with crime reporter Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) to uncover the truth and discover who her tormentor is. However, they soon learn that this killer isn’t an ordinary serial killer; he has time-traveled to find her, changing the fabric of reality along the way.

Luckily, you can watch this thriller for free thanks to Apple TV Plus’ 7-day free trial. The streaming service also offers a number of other original shows such as WeCrashed, Ted Lasso and Severance, so you’re bound to find something that piques your interest.

If you’re looking for something a little more spooky and supernatural, the HBO Max series The Time Traveler’s Wife is another show that might be right up your alley. While the story isn’t quite as dark and twisted as Shining Girls, it deals with a couple who suffer from a genetic condition that causes them to go back and forth between their pasts and futures.

It also features a few plot points that aren’t incredibly shocking, but that can have serious repercussions for characters and the world they live in. It’s not a show that will get you up in the middle of the night, but it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

You can stream Shining Girls for free with the Apple TV Plus 7-day trial, which is available to new subscribers. This is a great way to check out the show before subscribing, so you’re sure to find something you enjoy before you decide to commit to a subscription.

Based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Lauren Beukes, Shining Girls centers on Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss), a newspaper archivist who survives a brutal attack that plunges her into an ever-shifting reality. She soon finds herself partnered up with a sleuth who helps her track down her attacker.

But when a woman is killed in a way that matches the details of Kirby's own assault, she begins to realize that she's dealing with a very different kind of serial killer. The resulting drama is grounded in an unflinching look at the horrors of violence, and it's led by two of the most effective performances of the year so far.

While Shining Girls is a story of one woman's struggle to find her place in the world, it also examines the role of power and responsibility with a degree of complexity that's rarely seen on screen. And it does that by letting Moss' Kirby lead the narrative and by moving her back and forth in time, often playing out murders decades apart from each other.

This allows the series to center its narrative around Moss' character and make it clear that every time Kirby's killer cuts another woman's life short, her reality shifts irrevocably. Ultimately, this approach gives Shining Girls a unique perspective on the world of serial killers that goes far beyond its typical focus on death and trauma.

The first three episodes of Shining Girls will be available to stream exclusively on April 29 on Apple TV+, and new ones will premiere weekly every Friday until June 3. If you don't already have an Apple device, you can sign up for a free 7-day trial.

Netflix

Shining Girls is a genre-blending television adaptation of Lauren Beukes best-selling 2013 novel about a traumatized woman chasing down a time traveling serial killer. The eight-episode series stars Elisabeth Moss, Jamie Bell and Wagner Moura.

The story follows Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss), a newspaper archivist who barely survives a brutal assault in 1990 and later finds that a killer mirrors her own case. She joins up with veteran reporter Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) to investigate the crime and uncover the identity of her attacker.

But the mystery of the story isn't what's important here; the show's biggest selling point lies in how it handles its shifts between reality and Kirby's consciousness. That's why it can be a little hard to watch at times, especially as the director -- Breaking Bad alum Michelle MacLaren, who also helmed the first two episodes -- works so hard to keep Kirby in a state of constant dread and panic.

At its core, Shining Girls is about the horror of PTSD. And when the dread is combined with a time-traveling serial killer, there's no shortage of nightmares to be had.

While Beukes' premise is compelling, and Moss and MacLaren bring superhuman intensity to their roles, the story doesn't always work as well as it could. That's not to say it isn't good or that it won't be a riveting ride, just that it can be a bit confusing.

In Beukes' novel, the killer, Harper Curtis, visits each of Kirby’s four sisters in their childhood bedrooms, giving them token items from the room and killing them. After murdering each sister, he leaps forward in time to murder another one. And the more he kills, the more Kirby feels like she's losing control of her own life.

And, of course, the more she loses control, the more she's a target. And that's what the first three episodes of Shining Girls do a pretty good job of exploring.

The other thing I liked about the show is that it has a good handle on what it's trying to say about PTSD and trauma. It's also not afraid to confront the societal pitfalls that can make it difficult for women to survive violent crime.

The show takes an interesting approach to the genre, with some surprisingly dark plot points. As a result, fans of horror, mystery, and even time travel are bound to enjoy it.
