Tin Cup is a delightful romantic comedy about golf that makes a powerful point: if you play it safe, you'll never achieve your full potential. But if you let your heart and spirit lead the way, you'll discover that there's nothing like the thrill of playing the game to bring you joy and fulfillment.

Kevin Costner starred as Roy McAvoy, a washed-up former pro who runs his own driving range in a small West Texas town. He's also a drinker who has no other motivation in life than to hang out with his buddies, but that changes when Dr. Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) shows up and asks him to teach her how to play.

As the story progresses, Molly falls in love with Roy and he's forced to decide whether to betray his friends, lose his dignity and take her to the pro tour or win her over with a bold gesture so grand that she won't be able to resist him. It's a decision that proves incredibly difficult to make, but it's the only one that can possibly save him from losing his beloved golf course and his best friend, Romeo Posar (Don Johnson).

Ron Shelton, who directed Tin Cup, drew inspiration from Gary McCord, a real-life PGA pro, who played himself in the movie. He said the director was inspired by how McCord embraced his role and pushed himself to raise his game, especially during the early stages of filming.

Shelton also worked closely with Jim Nantz, the voice of Golf Channel, on the script to make sure everything matched up with reality. That meant shooting many of the tournament scenes at Kingwood Country Club in Houston, which he says was difficult to find. They also had to create a water hazard on the Tubac Golf Resort in Arizona for some of the more climactic moments, even though it was expensive and time-consuming to build.

In the end, Tin Cup became a box office success and one of the most popular sports movies of all time. It won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
