It’s a role that requires Styles to do just about everything but speak, which he doesn’t seem to have any problem doing. That might be a bit of a drawback, but given that he’s already a magnetic performer onstage and a gorgeously playful wearer of clothes, it’s probably for the better.
That’s not to mention that it’s a shame that the script feels so overstuffed, repetitive and insultingly reductive. The idea that the residents of Victory are a carefully curated community living in a safe bubble seems like a great one, but its premise is ultimately so thin and unsatisfying.
Don’t Worry Darling could have easily fallen into the same trap as Jordan Peele’s 2017 breakout hit Get Out, which was criticized for its lack of substance and narrative rigor. But a few months after its release, it’s clear that Wilde and her cast have found their footing. With a great performance from Pugh, some beautiful visuals and a few clever, original ideas, Don’t Worry Darling is a solid piece of art that’s sure to be appreciated by fans.
