Outcry, the new five-part documentary series from Showtime, examines the controversial conviction of a Texas high school football star. The controversy over Hulu’s sensitivity policy to political ads was spawned by a Washington Post report last week that three Democratic committees tried to purchase ads on abortion rights and gun control, but that they were rejected by the company due to “content related issues.” A progressive New York congressional candidate, Suraj Patel, started a social media campaign calling for a boycott of Hulu and has even encouraged her followers to follow suit.

On Wednesday, Disney, Hulu’s parent company, announced that it would bring the streaming service into alignment with its cable networks and ESPN+, allowing political issue and candidate ads to run. The decision was based on a review of Hulu’s advertising policies and aligned with those of the company’s entertainment and sports cable networks. It also reserved the right to ask for edits or alternative creative in alignment with industry standards.
